Between the ocean and the forest, treat yourself to a soak in nature in Les Landes

Les Landes in short

It's the ultimate holiday destination! From the almost uninterrupted string of beaches dotted with family resorts that line its coastline to the peaceful freshwater lakes encircled by pine trees, everything about the Landes calls for contemplative idleness. Here, you can leave the hassles of everyday life behind and dive headfirst into a bath of disconnection in contact with nature.

Located in the Nouvelle-Aquitaine region in the heart of Gascony, the Landes enjoys a very mild oceanic climate, making it a pleasant place in all seasons (although autumn and winter can be rainy). Combining nature, a rich gastronomic heritage and a legendary conviviality that is reflected in the famous férias and other summer festivities, the Landes region is an ideal place for families to recharge their batteries, and its coastline attracts large numbers of holidaymakers every summer. Lovers of solitude be warned!

The undisputed star of the Landes is, of course, its coastline, with its immense sandy beaches bordered by dunes stretching for more than 100 kilometres, where the Atlantic Ocean expresses all its force and beauty in a magnetic panorama. Its powerful waves offer a breathtaking spectacle, enhanced by some of the most beautiful sunsets in France. Some fifteen seaside resorts with picture-postcard names are scattered all along the coast. From Mimizan to Biscarosse and Vieux-Boucau, they all have the inimitable charm of seaside holidays, where you get used to the sand in your hair and don't plan anything except to enjoy an improbably flavoured ice cream with your feet in the water.

With its fantastic rollers crashing noisily against the sand, the Landes coast is a paradise for bathers and surfers alike. Indeed, the presence of beach-breaks (waves with a sandy bottom) makes it Europe's biggest surfing spot. The towns ofHossegor, Seignosse and Capbreton are world-famous for their surfing, attracting thousands of surfing enthusiasts every year to take on the famous Landes waves.

Why not take advantage of your stay to try your hand at surfing at one of the many surf schools on the coast? If, however, you prefer the waves from afar, comfortably seated on your towel, you can always attend one of the professional surfing circuit events held every year in Hossegor. Great show guaranteed!

While the Landes coastline is an absolute must-see, the hinterland also abounds in places to discover and natural treasures. Set back from the Atlantic coast, surrounded by pine trees, are majestic lakes with fine sandy beaches. On the programme: relaxation and water sports in a serene setting. From the Lac de Cazaux-Sanguinet near Biscarrosse, lined with delightful marinas, to the Lac de Soustons and the Lac Léon, near the Landes nature reserve, a real paradise for fishing enthusiasts, the hardest thing to choose will be which! In the surrounding area, the enchanting Landes forest will envelop you in its distinctive scent of pine trees mixed with the iodised ocean air.

As you head further inland, you'll discover lovely rolling countryside, the beginnings of the Pyrenees, populated by picturesque villages and green hills with winding rivers that you can canoe down. With no fewer than 200 hiking trails, the Landes hinterland can be explored on foot or by bike to the rhythm of nature. As you stroll along, you may come across the miraculous springs that are the stuff of legend in the region.

This foray inland is also an opportunity to discover the rich heritage of the Landes through the medieval town of Mont de Marsan and the delightful fortified village of Labastide-D'armagnac.

How to get there?

Les Landes can be reached by plane. To get to the towns in the south of the department, Hossegor, Capbreton, Moliets and Seignosse, use Biarritz Parme airport. For towns in the north of the département, such as Biscarrosse, Mimizan and Mont de Marsan, the best option is Bordeaux Mérignac.

If you're coming by car, the Landes is well served by motorways: the A62 links Bordeaux to Toulouse (Aiguillon exit), the A63 links Bordeaux to Bayonne and runs along the coast, serving all the seaside resorts in the Landes, and the A64 links Toulouse to Bayonne (Orthez exit).

Travelling by train is another good option. To reach Mont de Marsan and Dax, you can take a TER train from Toulouse. The Bordeaux-Irun line serves the entire Landes coast.

Practical information

🚌 Getting around in Landes

By bus:
As a tourist region, the Landes département offers many options for holidaymakers to get around. If you don't have a car, the bus is a practical and inexpensive way to get around. The highly efficient YÉGO - MOBIMACS bus network and the RDTL coach network serve the entire Landes coast as well as inland towns such as Dax and Mont de Marsan. Note that in most seaside resorts, free Yego shuttles run between the beach, the campsites and the town centre.

By train:
If you enjoy the charm of travelling by train, you can also take the TER. The Bordeaux-Irun line, which serves all the coastal towns as far as the Spanish border, is a particularly pleasant and practical way to discover the Landes coastline.

By car:
If you want to be on your own, you can also opt for a hire car. Numerous agencies offer their services throughout the region. Europcar, for example, is present in Capbreton, Biscarrosse and Mimizan plage. Information: +33 5 58 72 29 34.

By bike:
Whether you're heading to the beach on a whim, with a towel slung over your shoulders, or pedalling at full speed along the coast, your hair blowing in the wind with an exhilarating feeling of freedom, cycling is a real way of life in the Landes! The seaside resorts along the coast are all very well equipped with cycle paths, and you'll find plenty of bike hire services. 600 km of cycle paths and 1700 km of signposted routes await you, divided into 24 cycle-touring circuits in the four corners of the department. There are also 3 greenways to explore the Landes hinterland: Voie verte du Marsan et de l'Armagnac (52.5 km from Gabarret to Mont de Marsan), Voie verte de la Chalosse (54 km from Dax to Saint-Sever), Voie verte des Landes de Roquefort (20 km from Roquefort to Bourriot-Bergonce).

Guides and maps of the region's cycle routes are available from all tourist offices.

☀️ Best period

The Landes climate is oceanic, so seasonal variations are moderate. It never gets very cold here, even in winter. On the other hand, the weather can be rainy between November and March. The most favourable period from a weather point of view is between May and October, with temperatures of over 20 degrees from May onwards. Summers are hot and dry, often scorching, so sun umbrellas and SPF 50 sun cream are a must. The peak tourist season is unsurprisingly in July and August, so leaving in mid-season is ideal for enjoying the good weather without liquefying under the effect of the heat and without finding yourself in the middle of the crowds.

👉 Safety

While the Landes is an ideal place to enjoy a carefree holiday and frolic happily in the seductive waves of the Atlantic Ocean, there are some risks to be aware of. Swimming, the main activity on a Landes holiday, can be dangerous. The reason for this? The presence of baïnes (or rip currents) all along the coastline, typical water formations on sandy beaches created by the movement of the tides. In local dialect, this means "basin, bowl of water".

These extremely powerful currents are impossible to fight against and can sweep a swimmer out to sea in a matter of seconds. To avoid taking any risks and enjoy the pleasures of the ocean with peace of mind, choose supervised swimming areas and follow the signs. However attractive the idea of a midnight swim on a deserted beach, it's best to avoid it.

Another major hazard in the Landes region is fire. The pine forests are particularly dry in summer, so they catch fire very easily. To avoid any risk, the local authorities recommend that you do not go into a fire-prone area during the hot hours of the day. Smoking in the forest and wild camping are also strictly forbidden.

For detailed instructions, visit the Landes prefecture's prevention website. Information is updated regularly: Forest fires under orange alert - Services de l'Etat dans les LANDES

It's a great opportunity to enjoy a friendly, rejuvenating experience with your family, and to discover in situ the delicious local produce for which the Landes is famous.
