See dolphins at Lovina beach

Lovina stretches along more than 8 km of coastline**, along which you'll find a string of small coastal villages: Kaliasem, Kalibukbuk, Anturan and Tukad Mungga. You'll find Lovina beach in the village of Kalibukbuk, in the district of Buleleng.

This is one of the most popular beaches on the island, not only because of its black and grey volcanic sand, but also because of its exceptional fauna. Indeed, like Pemuteran beach, Lovina has a rich underwater life, making it an ideal place for diving. But the star attraction for tourists is often the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus)**, which has made this coast their playground.

The characteristics of the beach

Lovina Beach offers a pleasant alternative to the busy beaches of South Bali, such as Kuta, Legian and Seminyak. The beach stretches for 2km from east to west, with Kalibukbuk, a small village, as the centre of attraction. There is ample parking along the beach, with modern cafés and seafood restaurants nearby.

To the east is a shady promenade lined with art shops and traditional food stalls. We recommend staying until sunset, which is reputed to be superb here. Often, most of the tourists have left the beach by then, so you can enjoy it to your heart's content! Finally, on the edge of the beach, you'll see an imposing statue of a dolphin, a tribute to the sea creatures that inhabit the area around the beach.

Dolphin watching at Lovina Beach

Along the beach, you'll find jukung (traditional colourful boats) offering to take you off the coast to watch the dolphins. Dolphins usually make their appearance at dawn, when the first rays of the sun rise over the horizon. But you'll also have the chance to see them in the morning in general. These incredibly intelligent creatures come to swim close to the boats, performing jumps and acrobatics, offering you an absolutely fascinating spectacle.

Try your hand at snorkelling

Snorkelling consists of walking on the surface of the water to admire the shallow depths. Unlike scuba diving, snorkelling requires few skills other than being able to swim and being comfortable in the water.

Lovina beach is the perfect place to do it. Grab a mask, snorkel and flippers and head close to the shore during high tide. Through the translucent water, you'll be lucky enough to spot lots of coral and fish!

Where to eat afterwards?

Lovina is not very big and the restaurants/bars are mainly clustered around the edge of Lovina Beach and the small adjacent streets. Take a stroll at sunset to find your culinary delight. We recommend you try the Sea Breeze cafe in Cenigan. Fans of seafood will be delighted by the wide range on offer on the menu. You can also enjoy Indonesian specialities with a view of the sea.
