Kavos and the party, just south of Corfu

As a general rule, the north of Corfu attracts the most visitors. The south has a reputation for being less crowded and livelier, but in the end it all depends on where you put your suitcase down... because at Kavos, at the tip of the island, you land in **the fiesta capital of Corfu!

Kavos is a 100% seaside resort with a two-pronged approach: lazing on the beach and doing water sports during the day, and going out and enjoying a wild nightlife in the evening, or even all night long! As a result, Kavos attracts a predominantly young and festive clientele, some of whom enjoy themselves to the hilt, others who suffer the nightlife...

Elsewhere in the south, you can explore a number of beautiful beaches such as Potamakia and Kanoula, which are slightly away from the main tourist influx, while a hiking trail leads to the spectacular cap of Asprokavos, in a completely unspoilt Corfiote setting.

Kavos, Corfu's fiesta destination

Kavos is located at the very southern tip of Corfu, as if it had been kept out of the way so it could make all the noise it wanted. In this part of the island, the terrain is flatter than in the north, giving way to hilly, cultivated plains covered with olive groves, criss-crossed by small country roads and dotted with sleepy villages most of the time.

This is in stark contrast to Kavos, Corfu's number one party destination. For a long time, Kavos was just a small fishing hamlet bordered by a long sandy beach. That was all it took to turn Kavos into a seaside resort!

It soon specialised in parties and wild nights out, with a host of bars and clubs, until it became the place to be for young people on holiday in Corfu, with one thing in mind: the fiesta.

So it's all about the beach at Kavos: beach bars and weekly full moon parties in season, water parks, jet skiing, parasailing, water skiing, banana boats, pedalos, etc... or simply the essential duo here, parasols and deckchairs.

Alongside all this, a host of seaside hotels offer accommodation for everyone, some of them even turning up the sound to party around the pool! In short, Kavos is the ideal destination for party-goers at the height of the season. But the south of Corfu has other surprises in store...

Excursions south of Corfu

For those who prefer a more tranquil setting, head for the small inland villages in the south, where you can always find a good taverna, such as Spartera, just a few minutes from Kavos.

The superb sandy beach of Potamakia, another reference point in the south, offers enough space to suit all tastes: at the far end, at the foot of the cliffs, for those looking for tranquillity, or at the entrance to the beach, by the beach bar, to enjoy the comfort of a deckchair and a café frappé.

Not far along the coast, Kanoula beach, below the little chapel of Agios Gordios, offers much the same programme, with a few more pebbles in the water and a few fewer people on the sand.

Back to Potamakia, where hikers will want to follow the Arkoulidas trail: a short route leading to the ruins of an ancient monastery lost among the cypress trees, with some magnificent views of the southern tip of Corfu, the cape of Asprokavos and the island of Paxos on the horizon.

👉 Kavos and the south of Corfu, practical information

How do I get to Kavos?

  • By car, Kavos is a 1 hour 10 minute drive from Corfu town if you are arriving by plane.
  • By bus, there are several daily connections in season with the green buses from Corfu town centre.
  • By boat, if you are travelling to Corfu from Igoumenitsa, it is quicker to take the ferry to Lefkimi, the town next to the resort, with Lefkimmi Lines.

When should you visit Kavos?

If you're travelling with your family, or looking for a quiet holiday, Kavos is best avoided from July to September: the festival season is in full swing and the resort is packed with a young, predominantly Anglo-Saxon clientele. If, on the other hand, you love a fiesta, you know what you have to do!

How do you get around southern Corfu?

With few bus services, the south of Corfu is best explored by car, which is essential if you want to reach the beaches of Potamakia or Kanoula.

How do I get to Potamakia beach?

The track is not very good and can be difficult for a normal hire car to access. Don't hesitate to walk the rest of the way along the track to reach the beach.

Hiking on the Arkoulidas trail

On the track leading to Potamakia beach, turn left at the penultimate junction: it will take around 30min to reach Asprokavos headland and the monastery of Arkoulidas. The path, the start of the Corfu Trail, is signposted in yellow.
