1. The ravine and dam of La Peña and the arco de las Peñitas

⛰️ Difficulty: easy (X km - X m - ↘X m)

The start of this very easy, child-friendly hike is in Betancuria. From the former capital of Fuerteventura, the i1 trail takes you through the hills on an accessible walk that can be done at any time of year.

The first path takes you to the chapel of the Virgen de la Peña, the patron saint of Fuerteventura, and the hermitageof La Peña. The walk then continues to a dry dam, offering a splendid view of the island's relief. This first part of the walk takes around 1 hour.

From here, you can turn back and return to the starting point. If you're a good walker, trail i2 winds its way through the centre of the small canyon. The second part of this hike is more difficult and is not recommended for children under 10.

At the top of the climb, you come to the arco de las Peñitas, an impressive rock formation that arches like an arch. All you have to do to get back down is retrace your steps. In all, the walk takes around 2 hours and is 5 km long.

2. Pico de la Zarza

⛰️ Difficulty: medium (12.45 km - 709 m - ↘ 705 m)

The Pico de la Zarza hike is located in the Jandía Natural Park, in the south of the island, which offers breathtaking scenery. Covering almost 13 kilometres, this fairly technical route climbs to the highest point on the island of Fuerteventura, the Pic de la Zarza, at 814 metres above sea level.

This is a popular route for cyclists and mountain bikers, which in no way hinders walking. From the seaside resort of Morro Jable, you can park your car at the end of Rua de Sancho Panza, where the track starts to the right of the car park.

From here, skirt the Talahijas peak to the right and continue upwards on a reasonably well-marked and accessible path. As you approach the summit of the Pic de la Zarza, the climb becomes more difficult and the path takes the form of a stone staircase. Be patient and continue slowly to reach the highest point.

Once at the top, you'll be treated to a magnificent view of Cofete beach and the whole Jandía peninsula. To get back down, take the same route as on the way up. The walk takes around 5 hours at a moderate pace.

3. From Sierra de Licanejo to Villa Winter via Montañas de Joros and Cofete

⛰️ Difficulty: difficult (28.3 km - 776 m - ↘ 776 m)

This hike is the most difficult on our list. It starts in Morro Jable and then takes around 8 hours through Jandía Park, in the south of the island, where you can park your car in a small car park behind Las Coloradas beach.

After a while, the path leads to the mirador of the page de Cofete, a crossroads that offers sumptuous views over the whole peninsula. The path is wide and well signposted, so that walkers and 4x4s regularly cross paths. We then continue westwards along a winding road that approaches the ocean. After a few hours of descent into the depths of the mountains, you reach the small village of Cofete.

All along the way, plants endemic to the Canary Islands, such as the euphorbia of Jandía, decorate the shoreline. Once you reach the beach, you can stop here and take a bus back to Morro Jable...

If you're still up for it, continue via the PR FV 55 trail, which crosses the peninsula via Villa Winter, a historic house once linked to Nazi history. This last section is not very long, but it is the most difficult part of the walk because of the steep gradient.

Some tips for hiking in the Canaries

We would urge you to exercise caution when hiking in Fuerteventura and the other Canary Islands. Although temperatures are relatively mild all year round, the sun is always shining. Dehydration can quickly set in, so we advise you to take regular breaks and pack plenty of water and sun cream.

What's more, the paths are often rocky and good walking shoes are essential to avoid twisting your ankles. Finally, if you have the slightest doubt about your chosen route, don't hesitate to ask at the Puerto del Rosario tourist office, which has various maps of walks around the island.
