Exceptional sites to see around Les Deux-Alpes in summer

Summer is a great time to enjoy the mountains. If you come during your winter holidays, you'll discover a completely different landscape without snow, except on the glacier, where there is snow all year round. You can take one of the many hiking trails to admire the fabulous views. In the resort of Les 2 Alpes, you can admire the most beautiful peaks by taking a ride on the cable cars that will take you up to an altitude of 3,400 metres. Nearby, the Ecrins National Park offers more than 740 km of hiking trails with 8,500 species of flora and fauna. Other exceptional sites to see include the beautiful Muzelle and Lanchâtra waterfalls and the Lauvitel and La Muzelle lakes. Whether you're walking, running, mountain biking, ATVing, paragliding or on the water, you're sure to enjoy your holiday in the mountains.

⛰️ The Plateau d'Emparis

Have you ever seen a green ocean? If you haven't, you absolutely must visit the Plateau d'Emparis, a Natura 2000 site. There are several hiking routes along the GR34 that will take you right to the heart of the area. You can reach Lac Lérié

and Lac Noir, where you can admire La Meije and its glaciers.

For lunch or a drink, there are three refuges to choose from: the refuge des Clôts, the refuge du Fay and the refuge des Mouterres.

Bonus: you may be lucky enough to come across herds of cattle with their guard dogs.

However, there are a few rules to observe:

  • Do not stroke the animals.
  • Don't look the animals in the eye, they might see an attack.
  • If you cross a fence or gate, close it again well after you have gone through.
  • Keep your dog on a lead and check that dogs are allowed on your hiking area.
  • Do not wash your hands in their water supply. If the water is soiled with soap or sun cream, the animals will not drink it.

⛰️ Venosc and the Vénéon Valley

A typical village with cobbled streets and houses built of stone and wood, Venosc is a base camp for hikers and thrill-seekers. The Vénéon river and its torrents of turquoise water are a popular destination for hikers contemplating the valley at the gateway to the Ecrins National Park.

🚌 Access to the waterfall

From Les 2 Alpes, take the Super Venosc cable car. Or come by car and park at the Tourist Office.

It's a 30-minute walk from the Venosc Tourist Office, past the donkey farm (take the opportunity to visit it), past Aventure Parc, and straight on to the sign for the refuge de la Muzelle. Then take the narrow path on the left and walk for 15 minutes. The waterfall is not signposted. Take the same route back.

⛰️ The Lauvitel and Muzelle lakes

Two must-see lakes close to Les 2 Alpes with two great views of the mountain. Once you've arrived on the footpaths, you'll be overwhelmed by the beauty of these landscapes.

⛰️ Lac du Lauvitel

A 5.9km hike accessible from age 7, which you can also do accompanied by donkeys, in the Parc des Ecrins. Start at the hamlet of La Danchère, then walk past the café to join the GR54. You will then see two paths, one for the outward journey and the other for the return. It is advisable to start on the left-hand path, which has a gentler gradient, and return along the right-hand path. When you arrive at the lake, you may see marmots and be able to look at but not touch some beautiful flora: martagon lily, orange lily and spotted orchid. It is important to stay on the path and not pick up or move anything.

⛰️ Lac de la Muzelle

A 5.5 km hike, more difficult because of its steep gradient (1174 metres) but accessible if you go at your own pace. You won't be disappointed with the reward at the end. And if you want to enjoy the view for longer, you can sleep in the refuge (booking recommended).

Start from the hamlet of L'Alleau in Venosc, go to the last house and under the stairs there is an oratory. Take the GR54 up the ruisseau de La Pisse, where a slightly steep section gives way to a longer section leading to a footbridge. After a few steps you reach a plateau, and the refuge is a few metres below.

In hot weather, plan to set off early in the morning.
