Diving in Zanzibar, discover the wonders of the Indian Ocean

The island of Zanzibar is the stuff of dreams, with its white sandy beaches, majestic blue lagoons, lush forests and its many influences between East and West. In short, it has all the makings of a paradise destination with a dream setting. Lined with palm trees, its coastline is full of wonders to discover. The archipelago is considered one of the best destinations in East Africa for scuba diving. The seabed is a mix of tropical fish and multicoloured coral, and it's not unusual to come across pelagic species such as sharks, manta rays, turtles, dolphins and the majestic whale sharks and humpback whales. And if you're not into scuba diving, snorkelling will still allow you to admire a number of aquatic wonders. What's more, the water temperature varies between 25 and 29 degrees all year round, so you'll be able to sail comfortably underwater.

Zanzibar's most interesting areas for diving are to be found in the north of the island. However, if you'd like to swim with dolphins, they usually bask in the waters to the south. But before you put on your equipment, don't forget that the island of Zanzibar is subject to strong tides. This phenomenon has a huge impact on outings, since the sea displaces the marine deposit and can therefore greatly alter visibility, making diving complicated and even unpleasant.

Diving in the island's warm waters is guaranteed to take your breath away. Drop-off caves, colourful reefs home to over 500 species of animal, Zanzibar's underwater coral fauna and flora is rich in discoveries. Diving is possible all year round, but the best time to dive is from November to March.

Leven Bank

From the beautiful beach of Nungwi, set off to discover Leven Bank, considered by many to be one of the most beautiful diving spots in Zanzibar. It's here that you'll discover beautiful underwater cliffs ranging in depth from 12 to 55 metres. At Leven Bank, you'll find a wide variety of corals, schools of barracudas and cute nudibranchs (species of small sea slugs). Last but not least, if you're lucky enough to travel between August and September, you might just come across a pod of migrating humpback whales.

What's more, we dive along a slope that can take us down to a depth of thirty metres. You'll discover a variety of corals, clownfish, reef sharks, mackerel and nudibranchs. And if you're lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of majestic eagle rays or dolphins.

Big Wall

A diving spot reserved for experienced divers, the big wall lives up to its name and offers an outing along a large ocean wall. On the east coast of the island of Mnemba, this is a protected area with a rich and dense fauna. It's also worth keeping an eye out for large pelagic species. Giant turtles, whale sharks and manta rays can all be seen, depending on the season and migration.
