Discover the small village of Jambiani

Jambiani is a small village in the south-east of the island, just 1 hour's drive from Stone Town. The gentle way of life here makes it a little blue paradise for tourists looking for something more authentic. The village is a long way from the big luxury resorts, and for a few days you can mingle with Zanzibari life in a place that is typical of the archipelago. Just stroll along the beach and you'll find a magnificent lodge overlooking the sea at an affordable price. The sumptuous beach of Jambiani offers something for everyone, with scuba diving, snorkelling, kite-surfing and windsurfing all on offer in the ocean. In the evening, all you have to do is find the perfect spot among the seafront establishments to enjoy live music, cocktail in hand.

Jambiani was originally a small fishing village, far removed from the hustle and bustle of the big luxury resorts. You'll stay in small, cosy bungalows on the seafront at very reasonable prices. The watchword here is "slow life": here, you live to the rhythm of the waves, the sea and walks along the white sandy beach.

Spend a few days in the tranquillity of the area and immerse yourself in traditional Zanzibari life. This is how you can observe the daily lives of the men and women of the village, who work according to the tides. The men go fishing at high tide in their 'dhows', traditional wooden boats.

The women go to work at low tide, collecting seaweed which they then sell for pharmaceutical or food purposes. This rather new practice has become one of the most lucrative and important activities on the island in just a few years. This is also an opportunity to learn more about this practice and to travel to the nearby village of Paje, to visit the Seaweed Center cooperative farm.

This practice, which began in 1989, is helping to emancipate women on the island. A visit to the cooperative gives you an insight into the daily lives of these courageous women, as well as the process of seaweed farming and the production of beauty products with a thousand virtues. It's also an opportunity to do some beauty shopping, guaranteed 100% local.

Zanzibar is an island renowned for the friendliness of its people, and the population of Jambiani is a striking example of this. Don't hesitate to ask around and strike up a conversation with the locals to find out a little more about life on the archipelago.

On a stroll through the village, it's not unusual to come across a goat and the village animals. Jambiani's good fortune is that the village remains authentic and is spared the huge luxury hotels that are increasingly springing up on the rest of the island. Do yourself a favour and take advantage of the beautiful seaside lodges offering unbeatable value for money. Each establishment has its own restaurant, and you don't have to stay in the hotel to enjoy the talents of its chef. Let yourself be carried away by your desires, according to the menus of each restaurant, and change them every day.

The fish is generally ultra-fresh, caught on the day, enough to tantalise the taste buds of even the most discerning gourmets.

The crystal-clear sea and the immaculate beach are, of course, good reasons to stop off here. In fact, it's the ideal place for water sports enthusiasts. The sea is calm, shallow and there are few tourists, making it a perfect playground for kitesurfing and windsurfing. And underwater, the beauty of the area is no less impressive. All you have to do is swim a few fathoms, a little way from the coast, and you'll be able to see magnificent seabeds through your mask. And if you fancy exploring the ocean a little deeper, there's no shortage of diving clubs. You'll discover an incredible diversity of coral and fish.
