Visit the Ria Formosa lagoon

A visit to the Ria Formosa Lagoon Natural Park is a wonderful break from a trip to the Algarve. It's the perfect opportunity to take a trip into the heart of nature, observe magnificent landscapes and spot many birds in their natural habitat.

Seen from the air, the lagoon is made up of 6 islands, criss-crossed by canals that are ideal for sailing. All these islands are natural (ilha da Barreta, ilha da Cabanas, ilha de Tavira, ilha Armona and ilha Culatra) except for the island of Faro, which is man-made. But they all have one thing in common: superb white sandy beaches worthy of the most beautiful postcards!

To explore this superb lagoon, set aside a whole day and climb aboard a small boat. You'll spot pink flamingos, egrets and white waders as you cruise the dunes and canals. As you leave the lagoon, at the start of the Atlantic Ocean, some of you may be lucky enough to spot dolphins!

Where to stay near the Ria Formosa lagoon?

If visiting the Ria Formosa lagoon is just one stage in your Algarve road trip, we recommend staying in the town of Faro (rather than in the lagoon itself). That way, you can easily take advantage of the town's lively atmosphere, with its many restaurants, bars and shops.
