Visit Silves

The town of Silves, located in the Algarve in the south of Portugal, is a historic town with a rich cultural heritage. This little-known tourist destination will surprise you with the beauty of its architecture and its lively atmosphere. Its daily market, restaurants and bars are always bustling with locals. Silves has a very special atmosphere, quite different from those you'll find in the Algarve's other major coastal towns.

Silves is home to the majestic Medieval Castle of Silves, which overlooks the town. Built in the 8th century by the Moors, the castle is now one of the region's main tourist attractions. Visitors can explore the fortifications, ramparts and towers, and enjoy breathtaking views over the town and surrounding countryside. The historic centre of Silves is also very charming. The cobbled streets and stone buildings dating back to the Middle Ages give the town an undeniable charm.

A visit to Silves, a beautiful stopover that's all too often forgotten!

Silves is considered one of the prettiest towns in the northern Algarve. It offers a glimpse of what Portugal was like before tourists arrived. The first capital of the Algarve in 1249, Silves was already renowned for its development and prosperity in the 8th century. Home to the most brilliant Moorish poets, chroniclers and jurists, Silves was not only a commercial hub but also the cultural centre of the Algarve.

Typical and authentic, it has a very different atmosphere from the other villages in the region. The town has remained unchanged for half a century, especially inside its walls. You can visit its superb red sandstone castle, its cathedral and wander through its cobbled streets from another era. It's a charming stop-off that offers a vision of the "real" Portugal, a far cry from the concrete seaside resorts of the coast.

Visit Silves Castle, one of the Algarve's must-see sites.

Silves Castle is the town's most visited site. Portugal has many castles, but Silves Castle is one of the best preserved and restored in the country. To come all the way to Silves without contemplating its immense ramparts and beautiful red towers would be totally unthinkable! What's more, if you take the walkway at the top of the walls, you'll be able to enjoy a number of breathtaking views over the superb scenery and the old town. And don't forget to take a photo with the imposing statue of King Sancho 1st as you pass by.
