Universal Orlando Resort, all Hollywood in Florida

Walt Disney World's main rival among Florida's giant theme parks, Universal Orlando Resort plays in a slightly different register: here, it's not cartoons but Hollywood and its super productions that take centre stage, taking you on breathtaking experiences.

Universal Orlando Resort consists of two theme parks. The first, Universal Studios Florida, reproduces famous film sets and offers entertainment in various worlds from the big and small screens. The second, Universal's Islands of Adventure, is dedicated to adrenaline rushes with its roller coasters and true-to-life 3D simulations.

Like any good theme park, Universal Orlando Resort operates autonomously, with its shops, restaurants and bars in the CityWalk sector, its Volcano Bay water park, and its large hotels for overnight stays.

The motto here is "Fun So Hard" - what a programme!

Two factors contributed to Universal Studios moving far from its Californian base to the heart of Florida: the success of its first theme park, Universal Studios Hollywood, in Los Angeles, and the establishment of Walt Disney World a stone's throw from Orlando, which launched the trend for large theme parks in the Sunshine State.

In 1990, Universal Studios Florida opened its doors, cleverly located between Orlando and Walt Disney World, a stone's throw from International Drive, the city's main tourist artery. Today, the park has grown considerably. It includes two theme parks, Universal Studios Florida and Universal's Islands of Adventure, a water park called Volcano Bay, and a large leisure/shopping area, CityWalk.

There's also talk of a third Universal Studios theme park, Universal's Epic Universe, which will include a Super Nintendo World... fans of the genre beware!

Everything has been planned so that visitors to the park don't have to leave the grounds to satisfy their every need: dozens of restaurants with a wide range of culinary themes, bars, a 4K cinema, a theatre and a concert hall, boutiques to satisfy your shopping desires, and of course several large resorts to sleep in.

Major attractions at Universal Studios and Islands of Adventure

Each of Universal Studios' two theme parks offers its share of fun attractions and sensational experiences.

Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit

This classic amusement park ride is divided into several sections, not necessarily related to the attractions.

In Production Central, the Hollywood Rip Ride Rockit is a rollercoaster reserved for the most hardened: it goes at over 100km/h! This is also where you can immerse yourself in the world of Transformers, Shrek or the Minions, thanks to the impressive 3D (or even 4D) simulators.

In the New York section, you can ride the wrath of Revenge of The Mummy on a rollercoaster. The races from Fast and Furious can be experienced in the San Francisco section, while in Woody Woodpecker's Kidzone, you can fly in the company of E.T. the extraterrestrial!

The Simpsons Ride

Universal Studios is taking on the animated world of The Simpsons, with The Simpsons Ride at Krusty the Clown, A Day in the Park with Barney, and Kang and Kodos' Twirl 'n' Hurl, taken from episodes of Simpson's Horror Show. Fans of the series won't miss a beat!

Last but not least, The Wizarding World of Harry Potter - Diagon Alley offers you the chance to travel along the "chemin de Traverse" or board "The Hogwarts Express" train, heading for the other major Harry Potter attraction, this time at Universal's Islands of Adventure.

So here we are in the second Universal Studios park: here, the theme is adventure, and we're looking for even more thrills.

We start with Harry Potter with The Wizarding World of Harry Potter, the most memorable attraction, including a reproduction of Hogwarts Castle and a breathtaking chase with a dragon!

Superhero fans can spend the day on Marvel Super Hero Island, aboard the Incredible Hulk Coaster, a rollercoaster for the faint of heart (you go from 0 to 65km/h in 2 seconds!), or in the 4D simulator of Spider Man's adventures.

The thrills continue in Skull Island: Reign of Kong, home to a host of gigantic creatures including a famous giant gorilla, as you dive right into the heart of Jurassic World, where other extraordinary reptiles await, or through the fantastic tales of Lost Continent.

To take the pressure off, the zany world of Seuss Landing, based on the American cartoon Horton, or the light-hearted world of Toon Lagoo won't do any harm!
