Réunion's most beautiful waterfalls

Réunion is definitely the island of waterfalls! There are said to be more than 300 of them, but it's difficult to know exactly how many there are because Réunion is so full of waterfalls and pools in every corner of the island, particularly in the interior, the cirques, the north and the east.

Reunion's waterfalls come to life high up in the mountains, winding their way through lush greenery to spill into deep blue natural pools, often ideal for swimming. These waterfalls are also an ideal playground for canyoning enthusiasts.

The island's various waterfalls are more or less well-known and accessible; some are immediately visible from the road, while others require a more or less lengthy walk to reach. Some of Réunion's remarkable waterfalls are among the highest in the world, and the three highest waterfalls in France are on Réunion.

The Bridal Veil

The island of waterfalls!

No wedding on the horizon, but an impressive waterfall! The Voile de la Mariée is right in the heart of the Salazie cirque, not far from the village of Hell-Bourg. The waterfall owes its name to its visual aspect: the flow is so abundant that it forms steam that gives the impression of seeing the vaporous tulle of a bridal veil.

The waterfall divides into several 'tiers', ending in a magnificent pool lined with lush green vegetation. Legend has it that the waterfall takes its name from a tragic love story. A young woman running away from her father, who opposed her marriage, fell into a deep precipice. Her veil clung to a tree branch on the cliff, creating this sublime waterfall.

The Iron Hole

It is considered to be one of Réunion's most spectacular natural sites. At 725 metres high, the Trou de Fer is the highest waterfall in France and one of the largest in the world. A spectacular waterfall!

There are two ways to admire the Trou de Fer. The simplest, and most expensive, is from the air in a helicopter. The approach to the waterfalls is very impressive. But you can also see it from the hiking trail that starts at the Gîte de Bélouve. This ten-kilometre hike is very accessible, even for families with children.

The Langevin waterfall

In the south of the island, the Langevin waterfall, also known as the Grand Galet, is one of the most popular with travellers. The site is made up of several small waterfalls that cascade down a rock face covered in lush green vegetation and plunge into a large pool of clear water. The magnificent deep-blue colour of the pool contributes greatly to the beauty of the site.

You can swim or canyoneer in this idyllic setting. The waterfall is quite popular at weekends, as the banks of the Rivière Langevin are a popular picnic spot for the locals.

Access to the waterfall is easy and can be reached by car. Head for Saint-Joseph and take the road up the river from the sugar cane scales. The journey takes around 20 minutes.

In the east of the island, on the road that runs alongside the Rivière des Marsouins, the sublime Takamaka waterfall comes to life amidst exuberant tropical vegetation. The site is renowned for its record rainfall (over 6m of water per year), which gives it this superb green setting. Stroll along the Marsouins road or go deep into the Bébour forest to discover the Takamaka waterfalls.

Along the way, you can admire a multitude of waterfalls and pools, and why not take a refreshing dip in one of the natural pools. This site is also very popular with canyoning enthusiasts.

The Salazie cirque, the kingdom of waterfalls, is home to one of the island's most beautiful waterfalls: the Cascade Blanche. At 640 metres, this waterfall impresses with its height and is ranked third in France on the list of the world's highest waterfalls. A true spectacle of nature that you'll never tire of admiring.

The cascade Blanche also has the advantage of being easily accessible after a short nature walk. Set off through lush green vegetation, fruit orchards and small Creole houses... before reaching an impressive panoramic view of this magnificent waterfall. You can also canyon down the Cascade Blanche.

Practical info

Beware: the island's exceptional rainfall, especially during cyclones, can make the waterfalls very impressive, even dangerous, but it can also give rise to dozens of spectacular ephemeral waterfalls.
