Discover the Pyrenees-Orientales on board the legendary little yellow train

It's impossible to miss it in the middle of the Pyrenean mountains. It has been winding its way through the forests of the Pyrénées-Orientales for over 100 years. I'm talking about the "Canari". Why is it so emblematic of the region? Quite simply because it's one of the most pleasant ways to discover the region, but also one of the most unusual. For half a day or more, you can enjoy being guided through the Pyrenees, following the railway line that is the pride of the department and of Catalonia.

A train like no other

Instead of taking the car to reach the Cerdagne high plateaux, why not take the train and book a ticket for the "Canari"? The "Canari", as it's known to the locals, is none other than the yellow train that has been running through the Catalan Pyrenees since 1910 - more than 100 years ago. It is the highest metre-gauge railway in Europe!

A trip to the mountainside

Between Villefranche-de-Conflent and Latour-de-Carol, the "Canari" follows a route with a difference in altitude of over a thousand metres. The views are all the sweeter for it! You can take in the spectacular scenery as it unfolds before your eyes at perfect speed, and indulge in a little contemplation and daydreaming. Weather permitting, the best way to take full advantage is to climb into one of the open-air carriages for a 360° view.

With a 63 km route, the little yellow train serves 21 stations between Villefranche-de-Conflent and Latour-de-Carol. Perfect for planning a stopover in one of the many small Catalan villages.
