The parish of Escaldes-Engordany, where Andorra meets the world

If there's one place in Andorra that has it all, it's the parish of Escaldes Engordany. Relaxation, shopping, well-being and cultural discovery are the watchwords of this region. There's something for everyone. This parish brings together two Andorran towns, each with its own personality. On the one hand, Les Escaldes takes its name from the many hot springs dotted around the region. In Roman times, the area was known for its medicinal properties. This is still the case today. The waters are both healing and magical. Culturally, lovers of art and history will be spoilt for choice with the Viladomat Museum (exhibitions of works by Catalan sculptor Josep Viladomat) and the ruins of the ancient Capilla Sant Rom fortress. The historic dels Escalls bridge, with its superb views over the old town, is also a must-see. A must-see for tourists, of course! On the other side, Engordany, known for its quiet residences, is a great place for a stroll. This region perfectly sums up all the facets of tourism in Andorra, and every traveller can find the activity that suits them best.

Escaldes-Engordany has been a parish since 1978, divided in two: Les Escaldes, more oriented towards tourism, and Engordany, originally agricultural and residential. Here you'll find a sample of everything you can do in the area: relaxation and wellbeing, shopping, walking and hiking, cultural discoveries and monuments, and sport. It also offers a fine selection of modern gastronomic and hotel facilities.

The natural springs that feed its soil have earned it the title of spa resort, and it is also home to a number of spa centres. Its Caldea complex remains the main attraction and one of the largest wellness centres in Europe. The water temperature is very high (sometimes 70°C) and also contains a lot of sodium.

At Caldéa, thermal water is used in a variety of forms: steam showers, saunas, pools, geysers, waterfalls, various baths and all kinds of water games, hot air, etc. Its virtues are recognised as healing, decongestant, analgesic, anti-allergic and muscle-relaxing. This giant spa is divided into two areas: the thermoludic area with lagoons, bubbling baths and a fitness centre, and the wellness area where massages and beauty treatments are given. In 2012, the centre pampered adults by opening the Inúu centre, offering greater comfort, exclusivity and privacy.

Shopping in Andorra

When it comes to shopping in Andorra, Escaldes-Engordany and Andorra la Vella are joined by the main shopping streets (Carlemany and Meritxell respectively). Most of the shops are concentrated on these avenues and the small streets running perpendicular to them. You'll find luxury perfumes, clothes, home decoration and much more at competitive prices.

Culturally rich...

Escaldes-Engordany boasts a wide range of cultural activities:

The Escaldes-Engordany Art Centre

Linked to pure art, it is an interesting gallery housing a collection of sculptures and works of art in a historic space. Exhibitions are often held, highlighting works of art, modern sculptures or local craftsmen. These are punctuated by themed events and workshops.

The perfume museum

I was created in 2004 and is a journey through fragrances, from ancient Egypt to the present day. As well as learning more about the history and manufacture of perfume, visitors can create their own inimitable scent.

Sant Miquel d'Engolasters church

This is one of Andorra's most representative Romanesque churches. Built in the 12th century, it is considered to be one of the oldest buildings in the region. Inside, you'll find a number of unique and well-preserved frescoes, as well as Roman and Lombard-style elements. Geographically, it is located at a strategic point from which you can enjoy an incredible panoramic view of Andorra la Vella and Escaldes Engordany.

Sant Pere Màrtir church

Built in 1962, the church is in the neo-Romanesque style. The building has retained most of its original exterior features, including the bell. At the entrance to the church is the beautiful Gothic cross, which was installed to celebrate the recognition of Les Escaldes as a province of Andorra.

A place for gourmets

Gourmets will be delighted by the wide choice of restaurants on offer in Escaldes. The town boasts a wide variety of restaurants. Starting with this restaurant and grocery shop, Marquet Gourmeterie, which specialises in local, traditional cuisine in a vintage setting. Everything is authentic. For lovers of fine wines and meat dishes, visit theMarquert website for more information.

The Big Ben restaurant attracts diners with its hospitality and friendly, no-fuss atmosphere. The menu focuses on French cuisine at affordable prices. The same goes for the Casa Canut restaurant, very popular in this region. It offers international dishes to suit all tastes. It is advisable to book a table in advance for dinner.

The favourite restaurant is Delicius, with its European flavours, gastronomic, refined and perfectly presented dishes. The restaurant also caters for vegetarians with its fine selection of vegetables and fruit. The chef makes a point of offering a menu featuring local, high-quality produce, with a focus on colours and textures.
