History of Dammam

Facing the Persian Gulf, Dammam was just a small fishing port a few decades ago. In 1938, oil was discovered and the town grew rich. Modern buildings and infrastructure quickly sprang up. In less than fifty years, Dammam has seen its population grow (it is the 6th largest city in the country). Foreigners and expatriates have come to work in large numbers in this city that faces Bahrain. Today, its dynamism and lifestyle continue to attract visitors, and it remains an essential stop-off on a trip to Saudi Arabia.

The Share Al-Hob souk (also known as the "love market") is renowned for its many jewellers. In the souk's alleyways, you'll also find all kinds of craft and souvenir shops, as well as snack bars. In the evenings, street artists liven up the souk with their performances.
