Achensee lake: an Austrian getaway in the heart of the mountains

When you want to get away from it all, there's an Austrian region that's perfect for a change of scenery. Head for Achensee lake in the Tyrol. A stretch of emerald green water nestling in the heart of the mountains, the protagonists of a breathtaking panorama!

It's also the largest natural lake in the area. No wonder the locals call it the "Tyrolean Sea". The surrounding paths invite visitors to take their time and enjoy the local natural treasures during a walk or a sporting activity. In fact, cross-country skiing is one of the healthiest sports to be practised here. For the less athletic, head for the Karwendel forest or one of the sumptuous lakeside hotels to indulge in a spot of wellness... Nature, luxury and well-being are at the heart of the Tyrolean fjord.

The benefits of cross-country skiing: combining nature and well-being

Tyrol is the leading region for cross-country skiing, a discipline that is not just for advanced cross-country skiers. Professional instructors offer a wide range of courses designed to help you master the techniques and quickly become self-sufficient. And the good news is that cross-country skiing is easier to learn than downhill skiing.

The only difficulty is certainly staying focused on the instructor's instructions in an atmosphere as romantic as this countryside. It's hard not to lose focus when you have such beautiful scenery all around you. Between the fir trees, the mountains in the background and the nearby expanse of water, the Tyrolean countryside is a picture you just can't get enough of.

This Nordic variant of Alpine skiing is not just a sporting activity, but also a great way to get to know the typical regional landscape. The best place to try it out is on the shores of Achensee, Tyrol's pearl, in the small village of Pertisau.

Several shops provide the equipment you need. The Leithner ski school shop, located not far from the slopes, provided us with the essentials. All that's left to do is put on your skis and follow the path already trodden by the first cross-country skiers. On the programme: fir trees, alpine freshness, views of the peaks and... the ever-present snow, of course.

Practical info

👉 This winter sport is available from a very young age (from 4 upwards), so it's a great activity to do with the whole family on a holiday in the Alps.

Karwendel Park, a playground for nature lovers

Because the Achensee region isn't just for skiing fans, there are plenty of other activities for those with little interest in winter sports. Just a few metres from the lake, more than 737 km² ofgreen spaces flourish. The Karwendel Nature Park, Austria's largest, is home to a wealth of flora and fauna, thanks to the region's unique climate. Wearing snowshoes and accompanied by a specialised local guide, we set off in search of the inhabitants of the immaculate forest.

And although on the surface it may appear quiet and uninhabited, in reality it is home to many species that live, feed and sleep here throughout the winter. During the walk, you can follow the animals' tracks and learn to read the footprints left behind. It's a fun activity in a natural paradise that will appeal to young and old alike. Around the bend of a tree, you might spot a pine cone freshly devoured by a squirrel, which, with a bit of luck, might make an appearance in the wood.

The park is full of food and the vegetation is perfectly adapted to the extremely changeable climate. For example, the expert on Tyrolean soil tells us how a tree survives the winter by drawing strength from its leaves (we won't tell you all the secrets!).

The Alpine garden has also become a refuge for endangered species, and in particular the home of the master of the skies: the Alpine golden eagle. After being threatened for several years, this animal now lives in the heart of the massif, which provides it with everything it needs to reproduce in total peace. Nature is untouched and absolutely calm, with only the crunch of snow beneath our feet echoing around us.
