The Arenal volcano is an active volcano located in the north-west of Costa Rica, in the national park of the same name. It rises to an altitude of around 1,670 metres and is considered to be one of the most active volcanoes in the country, and indeed one of the most dangerous. Arenal was discovered in 1968, when it erupted spectacularly, destroying several villages and killing many of its inhabitants. The volcano has remained active for over 50 years. It regularly produces eruptions and lava flows that are simply magnificent to behold. The volcano is surrounded by dense tropical forest. Curious travellers can observe the volcano's eruptions from a safe distance, using telescopes and binoculars, or by hiking the park's trails.
Arenal Volcano National Park is one of Costa Rica's most fascinating destinations. At the centre of the park is the Arenal volcano, an imposing active volcano that has seen numerous eruptions in recent decades. As well as viewing the impressive volcano, the park offers a wide variety of outdoor activities, including hiking through the rainforest, swimming in the natural hot springs, and zip-line tours for a bird's eye view of the lush jungle. For keen walkers, the hikes are an opportunity to discover the natural beauty of the Costa Rican rainforest. Along the way, you'll spot the Arenal volcano, the surrounding mountains, waterfalls, rivers and even lakes. Arenal Park is an ideal destination for families on holiday, adventure and nature lovers and those looking to relax and recharge their batteries in majestic natural surroundings.
The Arenal volcano
The national park
Arenal Volcano National Park was created to protect and preserve the region's unique biodiversity, as well as protecting the area's natural and cultural resources. The park's highest point is, of course, the Arenal volcano. The park's dense rainforest is home to a variety of animals, including monkeys, sloths, exotic birds and much more. It's an animal-watching paradise.
Bathing in the park's hot springs
Arenal Volcano National Park is famous for its natural hot springs, the Tabacon baths. These pools of more or less hot water are fed by the geothermal activity of the volcano. Volcanic hot springs are considered to have healing properties for the skin and muscles. Their ability to relieve stress, muscular pain and skin problems attracts tourists, who love these sulphurous waters. The temperature of the water in the springs varies between 35°C and 50°C. These hot, relaxing baths are a real trap - once you're in, it's extremely difficult to get out...
There are several hot spring complexes in the region. Some are located in the rainforest and offer a natural, tranquil atmosphere. This is the case with the Chollín springs, which are 100% natural. In other words, there are no lockers or showers, and admission is, of course, free. Other baths, such as the Ecotermales springs, are luxurious spas with pools, bars and restaurants. Admission to these springs costs USD 40 per person, but the decor, atmosphere and welcome are truly remarkable.
