A village nicknamed Montefuma
The history of Montezuma dates back to pre-Columbian times, when the region was inhabited by the indigenous Chorotega people. This people were renowned for their crafts, agriculture and advanced social organisation. In 1502, Spanish explorers arrived in the region, marking the beginning of European colonisation of Costa Rica. By the 17th century, Montezuma was a thriving little port, used mainly for exporting agricultural produce and European goods. Over the years, the town went through periods of decline and prosperity, due to economic and political changes in the region. It was during the twentieth century that Montezuma became a gathering place for hippies, artists and adventure-seeking travellers. This bohemian community contributed to the growth of tourism in the region and, indirectly, to the preservation of Montezuma's natural beauty. The streets are filled with small shops, bars and live music clubs.
In the evening, the Montefuma nickname takes on its full meaning. The town comes alive with beach parties, concerts and fire shows. Backpackers gather to share stories and experiences, while enjoying the lively nightlife. This unique and festive atmosphere makes Montezuma a must-see destination for travellers seeking freedom and adventure.
