Vernaison Market

It represents the very essence of the Puces, as it was the first permanent market to be created. With over 300 stalls, it's the market not to be missed if you're looking for classic antiques.

Dauphine Market

This is the largest covered market in Saint-Ouen, covering over 6,000 m2. It's mainly known for its pop culture goods. What's more, since 2023 it has been home to a unique piece, Matti Suuronen's Maison Futuro, inspired by the architecture of the 1970s. Take a trip to "Les Merveilles de Babellou", for example, which sells haute-couture dresses, antique jewellery, designer bags and more. Whether you're a fashion addict or not, you're sure to marvel at the various models by Yves Saint Laurent, Chanel, Hermès, Mugler and others, almost as if you were in a museum.

Jules Vallès Market

Finally, the Jules Vallès market is perfect if you want to see just how low prices can go! As you'll have gathered, it's the perfect place to put your bargaining skills to the test, as the spirit of this place has remained traditional. With everything from music records and antique weapons to books and more, you'll easily find something to suit your budget.

When: Opening hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturdays and Sundays and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays. However the opening times may vary depending on the season. Note that the market is also open on Friday mornings, but is reserved for professionals.

History

Founded in 1885, the Marché aux Puces de Saint-Ouen was a Sunday market for rag pickers who sold their wares on the ground. However, over the years, the market grew in popularity, probably thanks to the extension of the metro line to the market in 1908.

What's more, from 1920 onwards, the site underwent a number of changes with the introduction of permanent markets, each with a unique style, such as the Varnaison and Vallès markets. Since then, new markets have sprung up over the years, and the market has taken up more and more space.

Today, the Puces is known as France's fifth-largest tourist destination thanks to its international visitors, but it’s also known for its place in entertainment. In fact, many music videos and films have been shot here, including the TV series Lupin and the film Midnight in Paris. It is also considered by some to be the birthplace of the gypsy jazz, as the gipsies invented this type of music by playing on the market.

Where to eat?

In general, visitors can take up to a whole day to wander around the market, so if you're in the mood for a treat, make sure you take your time and sit down for a bite to eat ! There's a wide range of dining options, whatever you fancy ! Regulars know their way around, many choose to take a break in Rue des Rosiers and Rue Jules Vallès, or in the cafés and restaurants in the market aisles. From traditional French bistros to international cuisine, you'll find the perfect place to satisfy your cravings.
