Tenerife's most beautiful natural pools

The various volcanic eruptions of Tenerife's Teide volcano have created natural pools over the centuries. As the lava approached the sea, it slowly cooled into the capricious shapes that today allow locals and tourists alike to bathe in complete tranquillity. Sheltered from the waves and currents, you can relax in the turquoise water, which is slightly warmer than that of the Atlantic Ocean. Although the majority of Tenerife's pools and natural pools are located in the north of the island, the south also has its share of little gems. Discover these secluded, wild pools, natural wonders refurbished to welcome bathers in complete safety, and even pools accessible to people with reduced mobility. All the natural pools are open 24 hours a day and free of charge.

Tenerife's natural pools

Volcanic eruptions on the island of Tenerife, the Teide, have been a real scourge. The last one occurred in 1909. As the lava from the volcano flowed towards the sea, it slowly cooled, creating convoluted and bizarre shapes. Close to the sea, these volcanic eruptions have created reliefs that, with or without the help of erosion, are now filled with water.

Today, these natural pools are the pride of the Canaries, who are well aware of how rare such landscapes are.

All over the island, these pools are sometimes isolated and tranquil, while others are quickly filled with tourists during the high season.

These pools formed by lava are called 'charcos' by the locals, and are often left untouched, but sometimes modified to accommodate locals and tourists in complete safety.

La Laja natural swimming pool: our favourite

Seen from the lookout point that bears the same name, the natural pool at La Laja in Tenerife is sumptuous. The water in the pool is crystal blue, while the contrast with the dark grey volcanic rock is striking. The volcanic pool is located on the tip of Saint Augustin. It's easy to get to, allowing young and old alike to enjoy a leisurely swim.

To get down to the pool, there are a number of stone steps and gates that will take you there in complete safety.

The pool is more pleasant at low tide, as there are fewer waves.

Be careful, the pool becomes dangerous if there is a lot of wind and/or waves.

How do I get there?

The La Laja swimming pool is in one of the most beautiful villages on the island of Tenerife, San Juan de la Rambla, in the north of the island.

Where can I park?

There is a small car park before the viewpoint. If it's full, you can find plenty of spaces in the local streets.

We recommend Tabaiba by Casa Teo. a no-fuss sandwich (bocadillo) restaurant.

The best natural swimming pools in Tenerife for children

If you want to take your children diving, jumping and swimming without fear in the heart of Tenerife's natural pools, there are a few privileged spots.

Isla Cangrejo, a safe, landscaped natural pool

Situated at the foot of the village of Los Gigantes, this large pool is great for children, as it is very well laid out and almost looks like a normal swimming pool. The difference? You're surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, protected from the waves by concrete walls, and it's accessible from Los Gigantes by stairs. In high season, this pool can be very busy.
