The history of Viharamahadevi Park in Colombo

Viharamahadevi Park, formerly known as Victoria Park, is the only park in the city of Colombo managed by the Colombo City Council. It is also the capital's oldest and largest park, named after the daughter of a powerful king who ruled Sri Lanka thousands of years ago. The land, acquired by a Sri Lankan philanthropist, was first used during the Second World War to house British army brigades. It was opened to the public in 1951. Today, the park welcomes locals and tourists all year round, and events and concerts are often held in the park's amphitheatre.

What to do in the park

This green space is the ideal place to relax during the hot tropical afternoons. With its small lotus-filled lake and activities, everyone can find something to do while escaping the hustle and bustle of the capital. Don't forget to stop off at the Sambodhi Chaitiya stupa and the Pettah floating market on your way to pick up a picnic.

Colombo's largest Buddha statue

A giant statue of Buddha, the Buddharupa, stands at the entrance to the park. Buddha statues are always synonymous with the values of Buddhism, in other words, compassion, altruism and benevolence. As in all Asian countries, the Buddha is associated with happiness, peace and bliss. In addition to the important symbolism of this golden statue, it contrasts magnificently with the green landscape of the park.

Mini zoo and aquarium to entertain children

Animal lovers can visit the Viharamahadevi mini zoo. Located to the south, the children's section features a small zoo where you can admire a number of animals, as well as an aquarium. Pony rides also leave from here.

An old British plane

A "BAC Jet Provost", a British training aircraft, can be seen from the park. This red and white model aircraft was developed in the 1950s. It's a collector's item, and well worth a close look.

A play area

Children can have fun on the slides and in the huts in the play area, while adults can relax in the shade of the tall trees that grace the site. The park is a place where people of different nationalities meet and talk.
