Strolling around the Place de la Comédie in Monpellier

Also known as the "Place de l'œuf" for its oval shape, the Place de la Comédie is one of the largest in Europe. With its impressive 19th-century architecture, it's an inviting place to stroll and contemplate. It's also the starting point for exploring Montpellier. Follow the narrow streets that make up the Ecusson, leading to all the city's landmarks. All roads lead to the Place de la Comédie, which is also where Montpellier residents gather for cultural events. It's a lively place where you'll find entertainment all year round. Pedestrianised since 1986, the square is home to numerous bars and restaurants inviting you to relax and contemplate. You can also go there to admire its opera house, a true emblem of the city, built in the 18th century and inspired by the architectural codes of Italian theatres.

The history of the Place de la Comédie

The Place de la Comédie was created in 1755, when the area was surrounded by fortifications that extended along the avenues adjoining the square. The Place de la Comédie owes its name to the surrounding theatres, especially the municipal theatre, which burnt down several times before being renovated, the first in 1785 and the second in 1881.

The square also features a historic fountain dating from the late 1790s, decorated with a sculpture representing three Greek divinities, the Three Graces. Although it is now a replica, the original work can be seen in the lobby of the municipal theatre.

The opera house opposite the fountain is an impressive structure. In fact, if this square is legendary, it's because of the architecture of its buildings. Dating from the 19th century, these Haussmann-style buildings are a sight to behold on a city tour or from a café terrace. The square has been pedestrianised since the 1980s, much to the delight of local residents.

The square is a magnet for Montpellier residents and tourists alike. From the theatre to the restaurants and numerous cafés, thousands of people pass through here every day. It's also a place for meetings and festivities, with concerts, markets and fairs, such as the Comédie du Livre held every year in May, depending on the season. As well as the fountain and the sculpture of the Three Graces, the Place de la Comédie is characterised by its Haussmann-style buildings and its opera house. The square is also the starting point for the historic centre, with its many streets serving every part of the city.
