Visit the Fabre Museum, one of Europe's largest art museums

In Montpellier, art and culture play a very important role. A stay in the city is an opportunity to discover one of Europe's largest museums, the Fabre Museum. Opened in 1828 thanks to the donation of works by a painter and collector, the museum offers a real journey through time. Whether you're an art lover or a novice, the museum is also worth a visit for the beauty of its setting and its vast spaces. As well as the exhibition halls, the visit also includes a 19th-century town house. This houses the decorative arts department. It features luxurious furniture representing the lifestyle of Count and Countess Charles Despous de Paul. There are permanent and temporary exhibitions throughout the year. A museum not to be missed!

The history of the Fabre Museum

The Fabre Museum is a historic museum that takes visitors on a journey through time. The city owes its existence to collector François-Xavier Fabre. This painter donated his paintings to the city of Montpellier in 1824, and it was on this occasion that the museum was created.

The building in which it is housed, a former 18th-century town house, underwent major renovations before opening in 1828. Extensions were made to the area around the mansion. The exhibition spaces are huge, covering 9,000 m², and several wings are open to the public.

A museum with varied collections

The Fabre Museum covers a large part of the history of art. There are paintings by French and international artists dating from the 15th to the 20th century, as well as drawings and sculptures.

Among the famous artists on show at the Fabre Museum are works by Pierre Soulages, Henri Matisse and Gustave Courbet. In all, 800 paintings, 3,500 drawings and 900 engravings are on display at the Fabre Museum. It is one of the largest in Europe.

The Sabatier town house, the art deco department

The original museum, housed in the Carbrières - Sabatier d'Espeyran town house, has now become a department devoted to the decorative arts. It offers a journey to the heart of the Napoleonic era. The restored furniture comes from the Cabrières-Sabatier d'Espeyran family and plunges us into the world of the aristocrats of the period.

Each floor has a different collection. The ground floor is devoted to earthenware and porcelain, while the 1st floor, comprising 3 rooms, is a reproduction of an aristocrat's flat decorated with objects from the Napoleon III era. On the 2nd floor, you will find objets d'art dating back to the 18th century and originating from the Parisian flat of the Carbrières couple.
