Venice's great art museums: a visit to Dorsoduro

Venice is renowned for the quality of its art museums, in all their diverse forms. Art lovers are in for a treat in the sestiere of Dorsoduro, where several major Venetian institutions are grouped together.

The Galleria dell'Accademia and its Venetian Renaissance masters, the Peggy Guggenheim Collection and its modern art galleries, as well as the Punta della Dogana (Point of Customs), the latest acquisition in Venice from the Pinault Collection devoted to contemporary art? Each period has its own den, all grouped around one of the city's most emblematic churches, the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute.

A stroll that can be done in several stages as you visit one of Venice's most photogenic districts: Art has pride of place in Dorsoduro and throughout Venice.

The Academy Gallery: the Renaissance in Venice

From the San Marco district, you can walk to Dorsoduro and the Galleria dell'Accademia via the bridge of the same name: this wooden and metal structure spans the Grand Canal, creating one of the most picturesque sites in Venice.

The Accademia Gallery houses sumptuous works of Venetian art: it is the benchmark for Renaissance paintings, featuring the great masters of the Serenissima from the 14th to the 18th century. The various rooms feature monumental Renaissance altarpieces, paintings by Bellini and his pupil Giorgione, and canvases by Veronese and Tintoretto.

The Punta della Dogana, part of the Pinault Collection

We continue this tour of Venice's cultural institutions with the Punta della Dogana, at the very tip of Dorsoduro. The site itself is magnificent: the building corresponds to the old customs office (hence its name), at the entrance to the Grand Canal and the church of San Giorgio Maggiore.

Venice's latest contemporary art centre, the Punta della Dogana, taken over by the Pinault Collection, opened its doors in 2009. This prestigious venue regularly hosts temporary exhibitions, so keep an eye on the programme! If you want to admire works of contemporary art all year round, the Pinault Collection is also based in Venice at the Palazzo Grassi, on the San Marco side of the Grand Canal.

The Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute, to finish on a high note

A must-see at the tip of the Dorsoduro, La Salute is one of Venice's most iconic churches: its location at the mouth of the Grand Canal, which is particularly well chosen for photos, is no doubt a factor.

And even if the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute is not strictly speaking a museum, it's easy to be mistaken by the works of great masters such as Titian, Tintoretto (including the famous Marriage at Cana) or Palma the Younger that it houses beneath its baroque airs...
