Itinerary: 3 unforgettable days in Nairobi

Kenya's largest city, Nairobi is quickly swept away by tourists escaping to the country's national parks. Kenya is home to some fifty parks and nature reserves teeming with animals. Lions, leopards, buffalo, elephants, crocodiles, ostriches and cheetahs share these vast arid plains, which attract thousands of tourists every year in search of adventure and wildlife. But during your trip to Kenya, it would be a shame to neglect a visit to its sprawling capital. With its wildlife, flora, culture, history, shopping and rejuvenating forests, there's no shortage of things to do in this capital that never sleeps. A bustling place at every moment of the day, you'll still find a pleasant and refreshing climate here, as Nairobi's highest point rises to 1850 metres. Take a 3-day tour of Nairobi, in the heart of this capital that will not leave you indifferent.

Day 1

Despite being the largest city in Kenya, Africa's wildlife is never far away. And it seems to be at its best in Nairobi. In fact, the city is home to an amazing national park on its outskirts. The Nairobi National Park, located just 7 kilometres from the centre of Nairobi, is sure to surprise you.

Set against a backdrop of skyscrapers, take a short safari in the heart of the city on your first day. A pleasant way to start your trip. You may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of 4 of the big five. The lion, leopard, buffalo and rhinoceros are all present in the reserve. Don't forget to stop off at the "Ivory Burning Monument" where, in 1989, Kenyan President Daniel Arap Moi decided to burn 105 tonnes of ivory (5% of the world's reserves) as a memorial and to affirm the Kenyan government's position in the face of the poaching that had ravaged the elephant and rhino population.

Nairobi National Park is rather small, covering just 117km2. It is therefore worth combining a visit to the park with a visit to the Sheldrick Wildlif Trust, the elephant orphanage. The centre is located in Nairobi National Park and only opens its doors to tourists for 1 hour a day. Between 11am and 12pm, come and watch the orphaned baby elephants being fed and bathed. Since its creation, hundreds of calves have been taken in and rehabilitated in Tsavo East National Park.

The daily efforts of the carers are considerable in caring for these baby elephants, doomed to die without them. Deprived of their mother's milk, on which they depend for 2 years, they cannot survive. The founders of the centre therefore developed a milk similar to mother's milk, which is necessary for the survival of these little orphans. They are then fed throughout the day (approximately every 3 hours).

Admission is based on a minimum donation of $7, so you can help keep the elephant and rhino conservation project going. Because in addition to the orphanage, the Sheldrick Wildlif Trust is committed to deploying anti-poaching teams across the country.

Day 2

The outskirts of the city offer wildlife attractions, while the city centre offers cultural activities such as the National Museum of Kenya, packed with national treasures. Start the day by discovering the country's rich culture and history. Start your day with a visit to the National Museum of Kenya.

The museum houses many art collections and has a botanical garden as well as a snake park. A visit to the museum will teach you more about the country's complex history and culture. The museum is open daily from 8.30am to 5.30pm. Admission costs 800 ksh ( 6euros).

Now it's time to meet the majestic giraffes at the Girrafes Center in Nairobi. This is where the beautiful and majestic subspecies of Rothschild's giraffe, in danger of extinction, sleep. This breeding and conservation programme was set up in the 1970s by a passionate couple.

Finish your day at the Karen Blixen museum. This museum, straight out of the legendary film "Out of Africa", tells the story of the writer Karen Blixen. She was a young Danish woman who married a baron in the 1920s. Their plan was to run a coffee farm.

Quickly abandoned by her husband, they divorced and Karen found herself at the head of her own business, a rare occurrence at the time, even more so in Africa. Her house, bought by Denmark and then donated by the country to the Kenyan government following their independence, is now a museum that retraces her life.

Day 3

End your getaway with a more leisurely day. Start the day with a view of the city from the air. Discover the KICC tower or Kenyatta International Convention Centre. The 105-metre-high building was inaugurated in 1974 as a venue for all kinds of events. It offers a wide range of spaces for conventions, weddings, meetings, galas and more. The Senate also has a seat in the building.

For tourists, head to the 32nd floor of the building for a 360° view of the city. From the heliport, you can see the capital, its mountains in the background and, if you're lucky, even Kilimanjaro on a clear day. Open daily from 8am to 6pm, admission 500 ksh (€3.8).

Now it's time for a bit of shopping. Discover the various Masai markets in the town. Every day, you'll find markets popping up all over the city. On Tuesdays the market takes place at the Prestige Plaza, on Wednesdays in the city centre along Mombassa Road, on Thursdays and Fridays at the Junction Mall, on Saturdays at the High Court car park (opposite the Prestige Palace), and on Sundays at the Yaya centre car park in Hurlingham. This is your chance to bargain for Maasai handicrafts, jewellery, sculptures, hats, bags and clothes - treat yourself!
