The history of the Merkurberg

The Merkurberg in Baden-Baden was named after the Roman divinity of trade and travel, Mercury. According to legend, a statue of Mercury was found on the mountain, leading the Romans to believe that the mountain had magical powers. Over the centuries, the Merkurberg gradually became a place of pilgrimage for people seeking healing or good fortune...

Today, the Merkurberg has become a popular tourist destination for visitors to Baden-Baden. Visitors can reach the top of the mountain by taking the Merkur funicular, which offers spectacular views of the town and the Black Forest.

The Merkurberg funicular

The Merkur funicular was built in 1913 and updated in 1950 to meet modern safety standards. It is powered by two carriages that travel along a 1,200 metre-long track. Each carriage can accommodate up to 60 passengers and takes around 5 minutes to reach the top of the mountain. They are also equipped with large windows, allowing passengers to enjoy the view during the journey.

👛 The cost of a funicular ride varies depending on the type of ticket (single or combined with other activities), but also on the age of the visitor. In 2023, a single journey will cost €9.50 for an adult, and €6.50 for a minor (free for children under 6).
