The Festspielhaus was built in 1904 by German architect Hermann Billing and opened with a performance of Richard Wagner's opera Tristan und Isolde. Since then, the Festspielhaus has become an internationally renowned venue for classical music and opera performances. It has also been the location for several films and television shows.
Architecturally, the Festspielhaus is an impressive example of German Art Nouveau, with its stucco facades and ornamental sculptures. The interior is equally impressive, with marble columns and balustrades, hand-painted ceilings and sparkling crystal chandeliers. The acoustics of the hall are also exceptional, thanks to the horseshoe-shaped seating arrangement and the use of sound-absorbing materials.
