Take a walk on the Üetliberg mountain

The Üetliberg mountain, to the east of Zurich, is a must-see in the city. At 869 metres (2,851 feet) above sea level, it is the ideal place to enjoy an exceptional panorama, but also to understand Switzerland's heritage. The mountain world is part of the country's folklore and customs. That's why Mount Üetliberg is a favourite destination for hikers, cyclists, picnickers and anyone who wants to enjoy the beauty of the Swiss Alps. Not to spoil your sporting pleasure, Uetliberg also has unique ecological features. You'll find over 400 species of flora** (wildflowers, shrubs, herbs, trees and even rare orchids), as well as a wealth of fauna (including many mammals).

The Üetliberg mountain, situated in the Albis range of hills, is the perfect place from which to admire the city of Zurich, its lake and the surrounding mountains. From the Felsenegg viewpoint at the top of the mountain, you can enjoy one of the most impressive panoramas in the whole of Europe. It's a well-known spot for amateur photographers, who can take spectacular shots home with them. If you're looking for an even higher view, you can climb a further 72 metres to the Radio Tower, which is close to the viewpoint.

There is no ideal time of year to visit Mount Üetliberg. Many Swiss people visit in November, as the summit of Uetliberg rises above the high cloud cover that characterises Zurich in the cold season. In winter, the hiking trails to the summit are converted into toboggan runs, and in summer the Uetliberg is the starting point for a number of signposted hikes, a mountain bike trail and the 'Planet Trail'. This one-and-a-half to two-hour walk leads to the Felsenegg cable car in Adliswil and offers a fascinating insight into our solar system.

One of the most beautiful hiking trails is the Planet Trail Uetliberg-Felsenegg, designed by artist Arnold von Rotz and opened in 1979. It shows the distances in the solar system. Each metre corresponds to one million kilometres. For two hours, you'll be following a scaled route that reproduces the distance from the Sun to the dwarf planet Pluto, via the eight other planets. Your journey will be punctuated by information panels to help you learn more about our solar system - an educational journey that's particularly well-suited to families with children!

Practical information

Transport: The S10 train will take visitors directly to the start of the hiking trail to Üetliberg. It departs from the "Bahnhofplatz/HB" station every 30 minutes. Please note that car traffic is prohibited around the summit.
