Cruise around Île aux Oiseaux

Ile aux Oiseaux (Bird Island), with its "cabanes tchanquées" (houses on stilts), is one of the sites in the basin not to be missed. A landmark of the town, it is home to many species of birds that come here to rest. You can walk or cycle along Plage Pereire, with its maritime gardens and lawns. Discover the secrets of the Île aux Oiseaux and the stilt huts with an enthusiastic guide. Apart from the birds perched on the pignots, the tall wooden posts planted in the water to mark the boundaries of the oyster beds, you'll feel as if you're alone in the world in the middle of the Bassin, which is bathed in winter colours. The area is easily accessible by boat, jet ski, canoe or kayak, and guided tours are available if you'd like to learn more about its history.

History of Île aux Oiseaux

Its name comes from the many species of birds that live on the island. Long ago, the inhabitants used this stretch of land to graze their cattle and horses, and it was not until 1820 that it became state property. The poverty of the soil led to the creation of the first imperial oyster beds. This area later became a protected park for birds seeking an Eden during their annual migration. The island is rich in ornithological diversity, with over 200 species of birds: wintering, migrating and breeding. It covers 300 hectares at high tide and 3,000 hectares when the water recedes.

Why go there?

Île aux Oiseaux is one of the must-see spots in the Arcachon Basin, home to the famous huts once inhabited by fishermen and hunters. Today, they are home to oyster farmers, who grow top-quality oysters here. There are 53 huts on the island, including the two famous cabanes tchanquées. The island holds a special place in the hearts of its inhabitants, and attracts many tourists. Depending on the season, the island is more or less pleasant to observe. During the summer months, there are a lot of tourist boats on the basin, which will certainly prevent you from enjoying the moment to the full.

Practical info

It is important to ensure the tranquillity of animal and plant species, and to this end a number of restrictions have been put in place. It is currently not possible to get too close to the cabanes tchanquées, which are inhabited almost all year round.

Commercial activities are prohibited and it is also forbidden to fly over the island at less than 300 metres in order to preserve the flora and fauna.
