Weekend in Avignon: 2-day itinerary

A fortress city in the Vaucluse department, Avignon was the residence of the pontiffs for 70 years and was the meeting place of Christianity. So you might as well expect a breathtaking heritage and architecture! Also known as the city of the Popes, it has carefully preserved its many vestiges of the past: chapels, churches, Renaissance mansions, the Popes' Palace, bell towers and ramparts. But the Provencal city has managed to renew itself with other events, less solemn but just as important, such as the Avignon Festival, which today places the city at the heart of international culture. The papal city lies at the crossroads of two vineyards: the Rhône Valley and Provence, with the Baux-de-Provence appellation. Here's a historic itinerary to take you back in time in just two days!

DAY 1: In the footsteps of the past

The first day focuses on the historic centre of Avignon and its remains. The good news is that the entire tour can be done on foot. We start with the not-to-be-missed Palais des Papes. The former seat of the sovereign pontiffs, this building bears witness to the omnipresence of Christianity in the Middle Ages. It is considered to be the largest Gothic monument in Europe. It was built over a period of twenty years in the 14th century (between 1335 and 1342). If the weather is fine, there's nothing better than having a coffee on the terrace opposite and enjoying the view of the building.

Another of the city's must-sees, and not just any cathedral: Notre-Dame des Doms. This is the city's oldest religious building. This religious monument is notable for its bell tower and gilded organ. Near the sacred building is the Jardin des Doms, a delightful garden adorned with fountains, pools and statues.

A gastronomic interlude?

La Mirande is a plunge into a distant and sophisticated past, a time of fine porcelain tableware and floral tapestries. An exceptional place, the various restaurants offer gastronomic menus based on the flavours of the region. And in Provence, there's plenty to do! More than just a culinary address, it's an unusual experience, as you can eat in the magnificently decorated lounge or in the house's former kitchens, at a beautiful country house-style table.

Next stop in the historic centre: the Saint-Bénezet bridge. Who doesn't know the famous children's song "Sur le pont d'Avignon"? This bridge was built in the 12th century and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site, along with the Palais des Papes, since 1995.

After a visit to the bridge, head for the Petit Palais museum, which houses a fine collection of Italian paintings.

DAY 2: the region's vineyards

It would be a shame to miss out on the vineyards around Avignon during a short stay in the city of the Popes. The Rhone Valley and Provence border each other, so this is the perfect opportunity to get out and about and visit the neighbouring hillsides. Both regions are blessed with renowned, quality wines. Head for Domaine Mayard in the heart of the village of Châteauneuf-du-Pape, around 20km from Avignon. This estate is notable for its historic tasting cellar, carved out of the rocks. Arthur and Hugo represent the 6th generation and have taken up the family torch to perpetuate the terroir and local traditions.

Domaine de la Janasse is a second address we recommend. The restaurant offers a wide range of wines (red, white and rosé). Founded by Aimé Sabon in 1967, he took over the family vineyards and built his own cellar. This passion is shared by all members of the family, with the children joining their father in the adventure.

Finally, to the south of Avignon, a short stopover at Domaine Dalmeran will give you the chance to discover the Alpilles regional nature park and a number of wines from the Les Baux de Provence appellation.
