Discover Avignon from the air, an original experience

When the city of the Popes seems to have offered up all its treasures, all you have to do is get a bit of height to discover it in a different way. And what could be better than a walk in the open air... No, we're not talking about an excursion into the wilderness, but a trip into the sky! And yes, Avignon is full of little-known wonders that shine the brightest when seen from above. It's only by flying over the city that you can see the contrast between the Rhône, now tamed, and the Durance, eternally wild, or the expanse of green covering the Ile de la Barthelasse, this privileged area facing the papal city and hiding many curiosities. A number of airlines take visitors to Avignon in a different way, just long enough to get a few minutes' flying time. Thought you'd seen it all? We invite you to discover Avignon from the blue skies of Provence.

Avignon from another angle

After wandering through the narrow streets steeped in history, treading the cobblestones of the famous Palais des Papes or contemplating the Place de l'Horloge from every angle, we suggest you get a bit of height. Admiring the city of the Popes from the sun-drenched blue sky is one of the best things you can do.

The city boasts a number of prestigious landmarks, including the world-famous Pont d'Avignon, with its haunting song "sur le Pont d'Avignon", and the Palais des Papes, the majestic complex that once housed the pontiffs of the radiant Provencal city. When you fly over these buildings, which bear witness to the city's rich past, you realise just how large they are.

What a privilege to venture up into the air to take in the beauty of the landscape. The contrast between the river that runs alongside the city and the pink roofs of the picturesque houses in the south is breathtaking. Another special feature, which can only be seen from the air, is the remarkable difference in colour between the Rhône, a long, tranquil river, and the Durance, which has retained its raw, wild appearance.

Just off the Pont d'Avignon, the Ile de la Barthelasse covers a total area of 700 hectares, much of it used for agriculture. Its size makes it the largest river island in Europe. If you pay close attention, you might spot a jogger or a resident walking his pet around a tree. And for those with lynx-like eyesight, the island is home to a lush fauna of nesting birds, hedgehogs and even beavers.
