Immersion in the giant abyss of Cabrespine

A visit to Carcassonne is also an opportunity to immerse yourself in a complete change of scenery, in the entrailles de la Montagne Noire du Pays Cathare, in the gouffre géant de Cabrespine.

This 250-metre-deep cavern, located 23km north of Carcassonne - or a 30-minute drive - in the Gorges de la Clamoux, is one of the most beautiful in Europe and one of the most visited caves in France. Between 70,000 and 80,000 people visit every year!

Right from the start, there are 3 epic options for this adventure: you can soar over the immensity of the chasm on a glass arm suspended above the void, or take a plunge on an underground accrobranche stretched between the monumental rock faces, or silently float in a kayak on the mysterious underground river that winds its way along the bottom of the chasm.

Visiting the chasm from above

With its 1,600,000 m³, the cavern has no shortage of angles from which to approach it. If you're the kind of person who likes to sit back and contemplate, you'll probably want to take in the view from one of the vertiginous metal belvederes overlooking the chasm, more than 200 metres high. Walking slowly across a glass floor, you'll be plunged 200 metres into the void by its transparency. You'll see the spectacle in your face, and feel the thrill of immoderation that goes with it.

The 50-minute tour begins in the Red Room, named for its walls coloured by the oxidation of iron salts. The concentration and size of the rare rust-coloured aragonite crystals are remarkable. The richness of the limestone formations is such that there is no equivalent in the world.

Finally, the Belvédère des Disques gives visitors the chance to get as close as possible to the immense vault of the chasm and observe the diversity of concretions that dot it, a fun exercise for geologists and other budding speleologists.

Of course, all visits are completely safe. All tours are guided, with the exception of the low season when they are audio-guided. In both winter and summer, the temperature is 14°C, as it is the rest of the year. So don't come in a T-shirt, and bring good walking shoes.

The acrobatic visit between the walls: the Accro Grotte

The most adventurous visitors will undoubtedly be drawn to Aventures Parc, the underground acrobatic course to be created in 2019 at the bottom of the chasm. Monkey bridges, Nepalese bridges, zip lines - this is serious business. After a sensational 400-metre-long course with cliff-side access, you'll reach the Tyrolienne de l'enfer, the highest in the course, culminating at 90 metres above the void and taking you to the imposing petrified waterfall.

Touring the chasm from below: the underground river

3 hours is a long time, but when you like it, you don't count. So, if you're in good physical shape and more at ease in the cool of the shallows than suspended in the heights, the river of the Cabrespine chasm has been waiting for you since prehistoric times.

Sitting alone in one of the kayaks provided by the organisers, come and glide for 3 hours on the underground river along a bed lined with mineral walls whose heights you won't see, lost in the darkness hiding the 75,000 listed bats.

It's an immersive, timeless adventure that's sure to take your breath away. A change of scenery guaranteed!

adventure also takes place at the bottom of the abyss, along its secret river.

Wine and speleology

When it comes to gourmet delights, not to say gastronomy, man has always been ingenious. Some winegrowers from the Languedoc region have fallen in love with the Cabrespine chasm, and are keen to experiment with the marriage between wine and speleology. They have succeeded in ageing their Minervois wines at the bottom of the chasm. There are 4 of these wine adventurers, producing 4 vintages that can be tasted first at the top, on the glass balcony, then in the Galerie des Excentriques - quite a programme! -then on the Belvédère des Disques and finally in the Puits aux Racines, the room where the wine is aged.

But their experience doesn't stop there, as their organic, zero-phyto-labelled wines are aged either in terracotta amphorae, oak barrels or glass bottles inside the great hall of the Gouffre. Connoisseurs will appreciate this.
