Enjoy a summer evening at the Cassis night market

What better way to spend a summer's evening than strolling through the Cassis summer market, on a warm evening, right by the water. Every evening from July to August, the night market brings together craftspeople, designers, producers and artists in the streets of the little fishing village. Arts and crafts are showcased, rooted in the traditions of Provence yet with a modern twist.

From Nice to Marseille, summer is synonymous with night markets, strolls along the region's ports and Italian-style ice cream. A real must for holidays in the south of France, the markets are a wonderful opportunity to find souvenirs and gifts, from a selection of lovingly crafted objects.

Summer markets in the south of France

Night markets are everywhere in Sanary, Bandol, Aix-en-Provence and Marseille. In Provence, it's a real tradition, and many towns, as well as small villages, organise their own summer markets.

With so much to do during the day - beach, swimming, sport, etc. - and the heat of summer, evening markets are a well-deserved cool-down after a long, sunny day.

Typically, the evening markets are an illustration of the rhythm of life in the south: you get busy in the morning, have a siesta in the afternoon and wake up in the evening to start a second day.

The Cassis night market, a family outing

The night market is held in the heart of the town of Cassis, between the calanques and Cap Canaille. Famous throughout the Bouches-du-Rhône and Var regions, it's a very popular market that attracts locals and tourists alike.

From 6pm, the Place Clemenceau and Place Baragnon are lit up by hundreds of loupions. Until midnight, strollers mingle to bring back souvenirs, sublimate their spaces with pieces by local designers, or simply eat an ice cream in the festive atmosphere of the market.

The Cassis market is like a small village of designers, bringing together the talents of Provence. In general, the town council prefers to reserve stands for local artisans and traders. So you'll find a whole range of local products, made by the talents of the region.

👉 Marseille soap, a local tradition

Of course, the emblematic Marseille soap is on sale at the Cassis market, but not just any soap. You'll find independent soap producers offering natural soaps with gentle, soothing properties. Many are enriched with olive oil, so as not to dry out the skin.

Soaps make great gifts for friends and family. What's more, you can take this opportunity to support a small artisan in the South of France.

👉 Handcrafted jewellery

There's plenty of jewellery on the market in Cassis. Made from wood, metal, Fimo clay or paper, the jewellery designers are all more creative than the last and offer you a wonderful selection.

👉 Plants from the south of France

Recently, the Cassis market has welcomed stallholders selling plants, but not just one plant. Some of them spend all year making terrariums or mini greenhouses. These pretty little glass jars filled with plants and mosses are light and easy to transport, even on the plane.

Others decorate plants without roots or soil, such as Tillandsias, also known as the daughter of the air. These plants are easy to transport and care for, and make lovely decorations for the home.

👉 Summer trends in Cassis

Many designers are present at the Cassis market. They are exhibiting their latest collections and summer trends. Linen, washed cotton, natural colours, the style of Cassis residents and Provence holidaymakers is made up of sober colours and natural fabrics, all elegance and voluptuousness.

👉 Customisable clothing

In recent years, new stalls have appeared on the Cassis market. These offer personalised baby clothes or fabrics for the home.

The idea is simple, the stallholders embroider a first name, a word or even a small drawing on the model you have chosen. It's cute, quick and a real pleasure to give.

👉 Sublimate your home when you return from holiday

Craftsmen come up with more beautiful ideas year after year to sublimate interiors; wooden lamps, hand-carved candlesticks and many other wonders.

Don't hesitate to ask for your items to be sent to you, as some artisans offer to send what you like straight to your home - perfect for light transport!

👉 Leather goods, a typical craft from the south of France

Some years, leatherworkers join the designers at the Cassis market. Leatherwork takes many forms, depending on the designer's style and way of working. Shoes, belts, bags, tobacco jokes - the leatherworkers make unique pieces. Discover their creations!

👉 The art of wickerwork

Wickerwork is a craft that is disappearing. Yet the town of Cassis is a fishing village. Back in the day, wickerwork was very much in evidence, thanks to the traditional fishing pots used to catch certain fish and shellfish. Since then, basket makers have made a comeback at the Cassis night market. You'll find baskets of all shapes and colours, offal, decorative objects and much more.
