The most popular owl

Dijon's emblematic owl is none other than a small statue of an eagle owl perched on the side of a chapel. Dating from the late 15th century, we can see the signature of the stonemason who created this representation. While many agree that it is an eagle-owl, others see it as a little owl, representing wisdom.

Despite these differences, the Dijon Owl is no less famous. Every year, many visitors come to admire this little marvel carved in stone, while others pose beside it. In fact, it is customary for wishes to be granted if they are made when the person touches the owl's left wing. Today, a trace of wear is visible on this statuette, testifying to the passage of visitors.

The start of the Owl's journey

Le parcours de la chouette is a walking trail through the historic centre of Dijon. The route, which takes an average of an hour to complete, reveals the main heritage areas of interest in 22 stages. So if you're keen to discover Dijon city centre in a different way, you can enjoy this trail with your family, friends or partner.

Practical info

If you want to follow the route of the Chouette, you can go to the Dijon tourist office. You'll find a map showing the route through Dijon's historic centre. You can also download the route application onto your mobile phone.

The first stage of the Owl's Route begins in the rue des Forges, where three private mansions are located. The architecture of these mansions stands apart from the decor, with the elegance that each building possesses.

Notre-Dame church in Dijon

Your itinerary then continues with a visit to the church of Notre-Dame de Dijon. You can admire its Gothic façade, considered to be one of the greatest masterpieces of the 13th century. It was during this period that the church was built, on the site of a former chapel. Inside, you'll see an architecture that differs from all other churches, since the weight of its roof rests on pillars rather than buttresses.

Testimonial

" Our Lady's Church and its Dijon owl are unmissable, it's truly incredible ", a comment made by Jimmy Aubertin during his visit to Dijon in July 2022.

Once you've visited the church of Notre-Dame de Dijon, you can continue your tour by stroking the Owl to grant one of your wishes. You'll have no trouble spotting the Owl, as it's a popular spot every year. Just wait a little and you'll be able to make your wish!

You will then head to Maison Millière, Dijon's most emblematic medieval house. Today, it's home to a restaurant, boutique and tea room, where you can enjoy a tasty treat or a cup of tea while you take a break. Don't forget to admire the façade of this half-timbered house dating from the 15th century.

Your tour continues with a visit to the courtyard of the Hôtel Vogüé. Open to the public, you can take a closer look at the façade and perhaps even go inside to admire its decoration. The building dates back to the 17th century, and was listed as a historic monument in 1911.

Passing through Saint-Michel church

Continue your journey through the Rue Verrerie. The architecture here is typical of the Middle Ages, while the many antique shops take us back to the old days. If you're a fan or admirer of antiques, you're sure to find what you're looking for in these shops.

The church of Saint-Michel was built in the 16th century and boasts a façade typical of the Renaissance period. Listed as a historic monument since 1840, this church is considered to be one of the most beautiful in France.

The Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy

Now a town hall, the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy is also home to the Musée des Beaux-Arts. If you have enough time, don't hesitate to pay a visit to this museum, which brings together a variety of works from different periods.
