The history of the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy

The Palace of the Dukes and States of Burgundy was built in the 14th century at the request of the Valois duke Philippe le Hardi. Initially a simple ducal palace, it has been shaped over the years to give it the remarkable architecture that we know today. Between 1450 and 1456, Philip the Good continued the construction to house the flats of the duchess and duke. A room was designed for receptions, and a 46-metre-high tower was built, known as the "Philip the Good Tower". Large ducal kitchens were also installed, with around six fireplaces, a vaulted ceiling and eight pointed arches.

In 1477, the kingdom of Burgundy became part of France, and new works were undertaken to enlarge the palace. The Bellegarde Gallery, in Renaissance style, was built in 1614, providing the first contrast with the building's Gothic architecture. In 1681, a vast restoration project was undertaken, although the work was not completed until a century later. A number of architects worked on enlarging the premises, adding the Palais des États, designed to house the assembly, as well as a chapel and a wing devoted to the School of Drawing. Finally, in 1831, the Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy became the Town Hall, while the Dijon Museum of Fine Arts also took its place there.

Testimonial

"A wonderful discovery... The Palace of the Dukes of Burgundy is a superb building. The works of art are well displayed. Admission to the museum is free, only guided tours are chargeable. There's a cloakroom with lockers where you can leave your belongings. A comment from Anne Dzi, after her visit to the museum in September 2022.

Climbing up the tower takes you to the very top of this architectural structure. From here, you'll enjoy a lovely view of the city of Dijon, and even further afield. The city's many emblematic spires and bell towers will be spread out before you, while you can try to imagine the city in a different era. Please note, however, that only nine visits to the Philippe le Bon Tower are permitted each day, and groups are limited to 18 people. It takes less than an hour to complete the tour.

If you choose the "tower aperitifs" tour, you'll need to travel to Dijon for a weekend to enjoy it. As the name suggests, once you're at the top of the Philippe le Bon Tower, you can enjoy a few mouth-watering bites of gougères with the famous Reine de Dijon mustard and parsley ham, accompanied by a Kir, to experience all the culinary riches of Burgundy.

Practical info

This visit is very popular, so remember to book your aperitif at the Philippe le Bon Tower in advance. It can sometimes take several weeks! It would be a shame to travel to Dijon without being able to enjoy this special moment with your partner or friends.

The aperitifs at the Philippe le Bon tower can be enjoyed during the day, but also in the evening, if you wish to admire the sunset from this height. You'll need to climb no fewer than 316 steps to reach the seventh and top floor of the tower.

In an old Dijon house converted into a bar... we discovered a rather stylish place. Muffled atmosphere, tasteful decor and lounge music... Welcome to Monsieur Moutarde! It's a charming place where it's good to stop. You'll receive a warm welcome from Michel, who looks after the entrance to this splendid establishment. Don't miss their original and delicious cocktails, prepared by an expert in the field. The bar also offers an all-you-can-eat brunch on Sundays.
