Dijon's historic remains in the town centre

Dijon is one of those towns steeped in history. The remains of a bygone era can still be seen in many of the narrow streets, with medieval houses, Romanesque churches and the Palace all reminding us of this former city of the Dukes of Burgundy. For lovers of history and ancient buildings, Dijon is a legendary city. If you go into the city centre, which is really the historic centre, you can enjoy a medieval atmosphere, with pretty half-timbered houses and mansions of incredible architecture. And there's no shortage of shopping, with no fewer than 1,000 boutiques in the hypercentre, enough to delight the whole family. As well as its unique architecture, it is also a landmark of local gastronomy. If you're keen to discover a city with many faces, you'll want to put Dijon on your list of must-see destinations.

A retrospective of Dijon's historic centre

The historic centre of Dijon, which is also its town centre, is bounded mainly by boulevards in the Haussmann style. These link Dijon's six main squares: Place Darcy, Place de la République, Place Wilson, Place Saint-Bernard, Place du Trente-Octobre and Place du Premier-Mai.

Saint-Philibert church in Dijon

During your walk, you'll have the chance to admire the various Romanesque and Gothic churches that grace the area with their bell towers. Among others, you'll be able to admire the architecture of Dijon's Saint-Philibert church, dating from the 12th century, with its bell tower built in the early 16th century.

Although you can admire the façade without any problem, you should be aware that it is not always possible to enter this church, except during Heritage Days. In fact, Saint-Philibert church in Dijon has been disused for several years, and was used as a salt warehouse during its last use.

However, for some time now, driven by the desire of the people of Dijon to bring this church back to life, a number of contemporary art exhibitions have been held here. You can admire part of the church while comparing its ancient architecture with the modern art it houses. Dijon is not only a historic city, but its inhabitants are also keen to preserve every ancient monument, dating from one era or another, so that the passage of time can leave its mark on every street.

The Hôtel de Vogüé and its many boutiques

As you wander through this historic town centre, you're sure to come across a number of mansions whose earliest foundations date back to the 17th and 18th centuries. You can also catch a glimpse of the Hôtel de Vogüé, built in the early 17th century. A blend of classical and Renaissance architecture, this establishment opens its doors to the public for a visit.

Dijon's historic centre is entirely pedestrianised. So you can enjoy a whole day strolling through these streets without being hindered by vehicles. There are almost 1,000 shops in Dijon town centre, selling local produce, souvenirs, typical Burgundian clothing and much more. As the centre is classified as an "international tourist zone", the shops are open seven days a week.
