Visit Innsbruck with your children in 2 days

Innsbruck, capital of the Tyrol and the Austrian Alps, is well worth a visit of at least two days. Nestling in the heart of the mountains, it boasts an exceptional natural setting. It also has a rich medieval past and many important monuments, as it was for a long time the economic centre of Austria.

Choosing between outdoor activities and the pleasures of the city is always a headache, so we suggest combining the two with our 2-day itinerary.

Spend your first day on the Mieming plateau. Just a 30-minute drive from Innsbruck, you'll be able to immerse yourself in Tyrolean nature, renowned for its great beauty. On the second day, head for the city centre, where you'll be spoilt for choice of visits and activities. Innsbruck is far more than just a huge Renaissance castle: there are plenty of child-friendly tours and concerts!

Day 1: Nature activities on the Mieming plateau

The Mieming plateau is part of one of Tyrol's most charming regions. With its ideal altitude (1000m, which makes it very bearable for people not used to the mountains), and abundant sunshine, it offers many outdoor activities, whether in summer (hiking, lake swimming and mountain biking), or winter (sledging, skiing, snowshoeing).

Just a 30-minute drive from Innsbruck, the plateau is easily reached by bus (line 4176) from the "Innsbruck Hauptbahnhof" bus stop at Innsbruck's main railway station. This will take you to the "Mieming Gemeindeamt" stop.

Walk 15 minutes further to the Barwies railway garden. Here you'll find a mini steam train (very cute), which will take you on a short 400-metre excursion through a pine forest through which the "Krebsbach" flows.

The road network passes over 2 bridges (built in 2000-2001) and through 2 tunnels (built in 2004). The mini steam train is also a real treat for adults, who can't wait to hear the whistles announcing the departure and arrival of the train.

When you've finished, take the 4176 bus back to the "Nassereith Abzw Brunnwald" stop in Barwies, and stop a little further on at the "Obsteig Holzleiten" stop. The Aschlandhof guesthouse, just 20 minutes away, offers an unusual activity: a llama trek!

Don't worry: you won't be riding a llama as you would a horse, but rather walking with one of these animals at the end of a tether.

Very peaceful and calm, the animals are well suited to children or people who are a little apprehensive. Llama masters" will accompany you on the hike, giving you plenty of information about the region and the habits and personalities of your little companions (the Loriot llama, for example, is known as the 'leader' of the pack).

This easy hike takes between 1h and 1h30, and will take you around Aschland and Holzleiten, two parts of the plateau that are not too steep.

On your return to the Aschlandhof guesthouse, don't forget to stop off at the restaurant there. Please note: you need to book in advance, and the restaurant is closed on Wednesday and Sunday evenings. Here you can enjoy delicious Tyrolean cuisine: the ingredients all come from the Mieming plateau, renowned for its unique flavours. Livestock and game benefit from a rich diet and mountain air, and this is clearly reflected in the quality of the meat and milk produced. Try the spicy venison sausages or the Michelerhof yoghurts: you'll feel the Tyrolean terroir!

Day 2: a dive into the heart of Innsbruck city centre

For your second day, we suggest a fun day in the heart of Innsbruck, with a museum and two activities (we wouldn't want to tire the children out with endless visits either!).

Start your morning at the Audioversum, a highly interactive science museum. The whole concept of the museum is based on how hearing works. What happens when this essential faculty is impaired? What role does it play in our daily lives? How is the ear made up? The permanent exhibition invites visitors to take part in a number of scientific experiments that focus on this sense. For example, using a virtual reality headset, you can learn about the link between the inner ear and balance.

Another well-designed installation allows you to create your own melody. Cylinders reproducing the hair cells of the human ear (these are sensory cells that capture the coding of the intensity of sound stimulation) are arranged in a large room.

Visitors can bend the cylinders and produce the sounds and frequency ranges associated with them. Finally, there's another installation where you can experiment with the spatialisation of sound: the "binaural game". Wearing headphones, you'll hear birdsong and have to move around to locate them. It's a really fun treasure hunt!

In the afternoon, don some warm clothes and head to the Olympic ice rink, Olympiaworld. This large sports complex has hosted Olympic events. It has two public ice rinks, an outdoor one and an indoor one called the TIWAG Arena, which is open from Wednesday to Sunday. The rest of the time, top sportsmen and women come to train (ice hockey and skating pros in particular).

After these various adventures, we offer you a dinner and show in the Alpensaal an der Messe, in the centre of Innsbruck. The Gundolf family's Tyrolean evenings will take you on a 1h30 tour of traditional music, with typical Tyrolean pieces, and Tyrolean dances.

You'll discover the famous "traditional yodelling" or "thigh tapping" (creating a rhythm using your body). During the evening, you can enjoy a 3-course dinner with a drink. For starters, you'll be treated to Consommé Célestine (poultry consommé with a cornflour or tapioca sauce, topped with a fine julienne of savoury crêpes with fine herbs), the main course will be Roast pork with potatoes, and a mixed salad, and for dessert, the most famous of Austrian tarts: Apple Strudel with whipped cream.
