The history of the Old Port of La Rochelle

Before being a tourist attraction, the role of La Rochelle's Old Port was first and foremost strategic. The Old Port and its famous towers, the Tour Saint-Nicolas and the Tour de la Chaîne, were used to protect the maritime city. These towers are a must-see when you visit the Old Port of La Rochelle.

Why visit La Rochelle's Old Port?

The first reason that springs to mind is undoubtedly its setting. The Old Port offers a very pleasant walk along the water's edge, with the city's historic monuments as a backdrop. The wind blowing between the masts of the boats and the lapping of the water lulls the visit to the Old Port to sleep. What's more, thanks to the pedestrianisation of the area, it's very easy to get around on foot and enjoy the surroundings.

What can you do in La Rochelle's Old Port?

The best way to discover the Old Port is to take a walk along the quays. All you have to do is make a loop around the pleasure basins, walking first along the Quai Valin, then the Quai Duperré, then along the Cours des Dames, before reaching the Tour de la Chaîne, which marks the end of your walk. With this twenty-minute itinerary, you'll have plenty of time to admire the different parts of the Old Port. Along the way, the Square Valin is a great place to relax with the family.

And don't forget to cross the lock bridges in La Rochelle, which link the different parts of the Old Port. These bridges add to the charm of this seaside promenade. To finish this discovery tour, why not stop off at one of the cafés that line the harbour. A gourmet break with a sea view, of course! The Jolly Sailor is an excellent place to enjoy a drink on the terrace along the quayside.

🍴 The Jolly Sailor

Ideally located on the Old Port, along the Quai Duperré and facing the sea, The Jolly Sailor is a very friendly British pub. It welcomes passers-by for breakfast, lunch and dinner, but also for brunch or simply to have a drink. While the terrace is great in fine weather, the interior is cosy and warmly decorated with leather sofas, comfortable armchairs and subdued lighting.

When is the best time to visit La Rochelle's Old Port?

To make the most of the activities in the Old Port, it's best to go there during the summer season, when the city becomes a party. Francofolies, shows and entertainment brighten up La Rochelle and its various districts, including the Old Port, which is the venue for many musical and sporting events. Not forgetting the "more traditional" summer festivities that are also held in the Old Port, such as the famous fireworks displays on 14 July and 15 August, which are fired from the Old Port and attract large numbers of onlookers and families!
