The Calvary Way

Easily accessible on foot from Megève town centre, the Chemin du Calvaire is a unique walk in France, not to be missed during your stay. Open all year round, this path was laid out between 1840 and 1878 by Father Ambroise Martin, an illustrious Megevan churchman. Even today, it is one of the only Sacred Mounts in France, with its chapels and biblical scenes.

Whether you're a believer, a churchgoer or an atheist, the Chemin de Calvaire is a must when visiting Megève. This one-hour walk will take you past fifteen chapels and oratories with architectural styles from another century. Several oratories, statues and frescoes also illustrate Christ's ascent to Calvary. But beyond this cultural and artistic experience, the Chemin de Calvaire also offers visitors panoramic views over the Arly valley and the Mont-Blanc massif.

🚌How do I get to Chemin du Calvaire in Megève?

The Chemin du Calvaire - also known as the Montée du Calvaire - can be accessed directly from Megève town centre. If you'd like to set off on this exceptional walk, head for the Place de la Résistance, near the Maison de la Presse and the Ladurée tea room. The start of the Chemin du Calvaire is just beside La Yourte restaurant, opposite the outdoor ice rink (winter only). There is a signpost pointing the way.

After a narrow section, the path gives way to a tarmac road, more suitable for pushchairs and wheelchairs. To access it directly, people with reduced mobility will have to make a diversion via Chemin Saint-Michel. Don't hesitate to ask the team at the Megève Tourist Office for a map.

🍴Where to eat next to Chemin de Calvaire in Megève?

As for accommodation, Megève's Chemin du Calvaire is not renowned for its wide range of restaurants. There is, however, a restaurant on the route, just 500 metres from the town centre. With its typically Savoyard wood panelling and panoramic terrace, the Refuge du Calvaire has plenty of charm. Chef Stéphane Socquet blends tradition and modernity to offer customers a refined, gourmet menu.

If you're feeling peckish, the restaurant La Yourte, at the start of the Montée du Calvaire (opposite the ice rink), serves unpretentious sweet and savoury dishes. Pancakes, waffles, hot sandwiches... all dishes, prepared with fresh produce, are available to eat in or take away. Perfect for a picnic while you're out and about!
