Quimper, one city, three districts

The historic heart of Quimper comprises 3 different sectors, each with its own specific features.

  • La ville de l'Évêque: the heart of Quimper around Saint-Corentin cathedral. Stroll through the charming streets of Kéréon and the Place au Beurre.
  • Locmaria, Quimper's oldest district: this is where the town was founded in Roman times. This is also where you'll find the centre of the faience industry (museum and faience factory), a famous speciality of Quimper and the surrounding region.
  • The town of the Dukes of Brittany: lose yourself in the narrow streets lined with old half-timbered houses.

Quimper Tourist Office organises several guided tours.

Saint-Corentin Cathedral, Quimper's Gothic jewel

This is the most remarkable religious building in the Breton city. This Gothic marvel can be seen from afar.

Its two spires rise high into the Cornouaille sky. They reach a height of over 75 metres!

And don't forget the splendid coloured stained glass windows. They evoke medieval times and the relationship with religion. The colours of the stained glass windows are remarkable.

The cathedral was built from the 13th century onwards, and underwent several alterations over the centuries. Finally, take a close look at the two spires above the building, which were built in 1856.

To get a good shot of the cathedral, head towards rue Kéréon.

In fact, this central Quimper thoroughfare, lined with corbelled houses, offers a superb view of the monument!

🕐The cathedral is open all year round, except on Sunday mornings.

Stroll along the banks of the Odet river

Once you've finished exploring the cathedral, take advantage of your free time to stroll along the banks of the Odet.

Quimper is fortunate to be located at the confluence of two rivers, the Steir and the Odet. What's more, the riverbanks are often enhanced by colourful flowers.

🗓️Here is a perfect walk in spring, summer and even autumn!

There are also several places in this part of the town where you can eat out or simply have a drink.

Café de l'Épée is a popular meeting place for locals and tourists visiting Quimper. The food is very good value for money!

🕐This central Quimper address is open every day from 10:30am to midnight.

Finally, the Halles Saint-François is home to the Finistère Prefecture market. If you're a lover of Breton gastronomy and produce, this is the place for you!

🗓️ When can I come and discover Quimper?

Quimper and the south of Finistère (the Cornouaille region) are a holiday destination that attracts visitors all year round.

However, it is during the summer months, from June to September, that the area is at its busiest.

Out of season, this part of Brittany takes on a quieter atmosphere, making it an ideal destination for a romantic weekend off the beaten track.

As a bonus, some winter days are sometimes set under beautiful blue skies!

🚌How do I get to Quimper and South Finistère and get around the city?

By road, several major trunk roads serve the Quimper conurbation. The N165 links Quimper to Brest and Lorient, and further afield to Nantes and Paris.

From Quimper, you can take the D765 to Douarnenez.

If you choose to travel by train, there are several SNCF connections from Paris. The journey from the capital takes just 3h30, and most of it is on a high-speed line.

The town is also connected to the capital by air. Quimper-Bretagne airport is to the west of the town.

Once you're in the heart of the city, you can get around on the Quimper Bretagne Occidentale bus network: QUB.
