The historic heart of Quimper comprises 3 different sectors, each with its own specific features.
- La ville de l'Évêque: the heart of Quimper around Saint-Corentin cathedral. Stroll through the charming streets of Kéréon and the Place au Beurre.
- Locmaria, Quimper's oldest district: this is where the town was founded in Roman times. This is also where you'll find the centre of the faience industry (museum and faience factory), a famous speciality of Quimper and the surrounding region.
- The town of the Dukes of Brittany: lose yourself in the narrow streets lined with old half-timbered houses.
Quimper Tourist Office organises several guided tours.
Saint-Corentin Cathedral, Quimper's Gothic jewel
This is the most remarkable religious building in the Breton city. This Gothic marvel can be seen from afar.
Its two spires rise high into the Cornouaille sky. They reach a height of over 75 metres!
And don't forget the splendid coloured stained glass windows. They evoke medieval times and the relationship with religion. The colours of the stained glass windows are remarkable.
The cathedral was built from the 13th century onwards, and underwent several alterations over the centuries. Finally, take a close look at the two spires above the building, which were built in 1856.
To get a good shot of the cathedral, head towards rue Kéréon.
In fact, this central Quimper thoroughfare, lined with corbelled houses, offers a superb view of the monument!
🕐The cathedral is open all year round, except on Sunday mornings.
