Enjoy a beer at the old Stiegl brewery

Beer has been brewed in Salzburg for 600 years. With eleven breweries to its name, the city is often referred to as Austria's beer capital. This can be explained by its history: when Salzburg officially became Austrian in 1817, new production methods led to a revival in beer production.

The industry flourished, and by 1860 no fewer than 75 breweries were competing in the city. The shortages of the First and Second World Wars led to a decline in the brewing industry. Some breweries nevertheless survived the wreckage. This is particularly true of Stiegl, one of the city's oldest, founded in 1492. It is currently the largest privately-owned brewery in Austria. Anyone wishing to learn more about Salzburg beer, or even taste one, should visit this must-see venue!

A success story that dates back to 1492

Since the brewery was founded in 1492, Stiegl-Märzen beer has established itself as a popular beverage much appreciated by Austrians. Originally located in Salzburg city centre, the bottling plant moved to the Maxglan section of Salzburg, further out in the 19th century.

The company has been run by the Kiener family for 120 years, and is renowned for its expertise. The brewers are committed to using high-quality, sustainable regional ingredients. For example, Stiegl-Märzen contains pure, untreated spring water from a well deep in the Untersberg.

Visit the beer museum

Stiegl invites you to visit the interactive brewery museum (stiegl- Brauwelt), which covers 5,000 m². During this interesting tour, you'll learn about the beer-making process, and have the chance to see local industrial installations. You'll also learn how the fermentation process works, as well as a host of cultural anecdotes about the drink. Did you know, for example, that Mozart loved Stiegl?

In the huge, modern brewhouse, you can watch 90,000 bottles being filled every hour. We recommend you take the guided tour, which is more comprehensive than the audio guide. At the end of the tour, a beer and pretzel tasting is included in the price of the ticket.

Continue your tasting in the brasserie's restaurant and bar

The Stiegl brewery has had a well-known restaurant for several years now, the Stiegl-Keller. Its terrace, which offers a breathtaking view of the old town of Salzburg, is an undeniable success, so we recommend you make a reservation. The dishes served, affordable and tasty, are taken from the Austrian tradition: Wiener Schnitzel, crispy roast pork, fried chicken or Salzburger Nockerl. Chef Alex Nagy always attaches great importance to the quality of the produce, which is sourced from regional producers.

The recommended menu features dishes with excellent seasonal produce (asparagus, wild garlic, rhubarb, strawberries and chanterelle mushrooms). The Stiegl-Keller also offers a full range of beers from the Stiegl and Wildshut private breweries.

""The restaurant is very well located with a beautiful view of old Salzburg. Local dishes, well prepared, good and affordable. Even the stairs leading to the terrace are magnificent. The house beer tops it all off (be careful, it's 12°). A must for eating out in Salzburg! "

Those who simply want to enjoy an aperitif can also do so in the "Stieglitz" bar, located in the former engine room. Here you can taste and buy national and international beer specialities, as well as unique beer-based cocktails.
