Spread over more than ten hectares, this area was designed by Vauban in 1681. The fortress was built in the shape of a star. Unfortunately, it was destroyed during the siege of Strasbourg in 1870 and was abandoned for several years before being converted into a garden in 1964. Today, only 2 of the 5 branches of the citadel remain, and a number of remains, including an emergency gate, an embankment and the old moat, bear witness to the citadel's busy past.
Strasbourg is one of the cities that breathes fresh air. Numerous green spaces are scattered around the city centre and outskirts to the delight of residents. There are mixed gardens with trees and plants, as well as play areas for children. The programme includes walks and strolls along the paths. Some parks offer unusual facilities for a good dose of entertainment, such as the Orangerie, which has a zoo, a small farm and a bowling alley. Even after the festive season, when the city takes down its Christmas decorations, it's impossible to get bored. Springtime brings colourful flowers to the embankments and seasonal activities such as open-air cinema and a bike ride over the footbridge in Heyritz Park. All the green spaces have been put to good use, making us want to take a stroll. Here's a list of the main places to chill out alone, with family or friends in the Alsatian city.
