The history of the Capitol

The Capitole is a very important monument in the history of the pink city. It was created in the 12th century by the municipal councillors, known as the "Capitouls", who administered the city and thus gave it its name. There were eight Capitouls, hence the eight marble columns on the pediment of the building!

Still home to the Town Hall today, the Capitole has been the seat of municipal power for nearly eight centuries, and is the product of a complex history. Its walls still tell of the great moments in Toulouse's history: from the Cathar episode to the creation of the Jeux Floraux, and from the Counts of Toulouse to the siege of the city!

It is said that the 4 main branches of this cross represent the 4 seasons and that the 12 peaks located on these branches represent the months of the year. The 12 astrological signs are engraved on the bronze. When you visit the square for the first time, it's customary to stand on your sign and make a wish!

Where to eat at the Capitole?

If you're looking for a restaurant on Place du Capitole, head for the Bibent brasserie, a Toulouse institution for nearly 180 years! It was renovated in 2009 to restore the brasserie to its original splendour and colours: green, red and gold.

Le Bibent is as much a feast for the eyes as it is for the taste buds. For 10 years, Christian Constant, a Michelin-starred chef from Montauban, was in charge of the brasserie. Today, chef Yann Ghazal continues to offer traditional cuisine with a modern twist. Go for it!
