Located on the roof of Italy's first Fiat factory, the Pinacoteca Agnelli was founded in 2002 by the family of the famous car company. It bears the name of Giovanni Agnelli, former chairman of Fiat and a great art collector. He built up this collection of 25 masterpieces with his wife Marella Carcciolo.
A visit to the Pinacoteca Agnelli means admiring masterpieces of modern and contemporary art while following in the footsteps of Fiat. The Pinacoteca is located on the roofs of Lingotto, the carmaker's former factory. Designed by architect Renzo Piano, the Pinacoteca resembles a control tower balanced above the famous oval racetrack. This track, known since 2021 as the Pista 500, has been transformed into a green corridor and exhibition space. Installations, sculptures and projections are regularly presented to the public. The Pinacothèque's permanent collection features works from the late 19th and 20th centuries. The great names of modern and contemporary art are represented, including Matisse, Rothko, Pollock and Picasso. At the same time, temporary exhibitions showcase international contemporary artists. Finally, on the 4th floor of the museum, you can visit Casa 500, a permanent exhibition dedicated to the iconic little car, the Fiat 500.
A museum in the former Fiat factory
In the early 1980s, with the factory closed down, the Fiat family commissioned architect Renzo Piano (who also designed the Centre Pompidou in Paris) to refurbish the site. He designed a rectangular box above the racetrack to house the Pinacoteca and a bubble for the auditorium. Thanks to him and the Fiat family, the factory became one of the city's major cultural venues.
A cultural green corridor
The Pinacoteca is located on the roof of the Lingotto factory, where the factory's car track used to be. This was used to test the freshly assembled cars. As a result, a great deal of pollution was released. To demonstrate its commitment to current ecological concerns, the Fiat family has redesigned the track.
Since 2021, this track has become the Pista 500, a green lung in the heart of Turin. With more than 40,000 plants, this urban garden can be visited as a continuation of the Pinacoteca, as it also hosts installations, sculptures and projections.
A collection combining contemporary art and the history of Fiat
The Pinacoteca Agnelli houses a collection of modern and contemporary paintings and prints, with iconic works by artists such as Andy Warhol, Pablo Picasso, Jackson Pollock and Marcel Duchamp. Here you can see the famous Campbell's soup cans and Warhol's portraits of Marilyn Monroe. Since 2022, the Pinacothèque has sought to bring these masterpieces into dialogue with contemporary reflections on art, society and history.
Since 2021, the museum has been honouring Fiat with a permanent exhibition, Casa 500, on the history of the Fiat 500. The 700 m2 of exhibition space tells the story of the origins of the little car right up to the present day. Talking about the Fiat 500 is also an opportunity for the brand to talk about its history, its progress and its plans for the future.
Test the FiatCafé500 and its panoramic terrace
Located on the 4th floor of the Pinacoteca, in the Casa 500, the FiatCafé500 has a panoramic terrace overlooking the Pista 500 and Turin. Drinking a ristretto or a cioccolata calda while admiring this beautiful view is a great idea, don't you think? For lunch, you'll find snacks and pastries.
