The Valencia Biopark, a zoo dedicated to animal welfare

The Bioparc, which opened its doors in 2008, is a must-see for all animal lovers. This zoo is all about animal welfare: in the Cabecera park, located in the former bed of the River Turia, you'll find 100,000 square metres of superbly landscaped grounds, where 3,000 animals from Africa roam at their leisure. Dedicated to the protection of endangered species, the zoo boasts some 500 births, including that of the first baby gorilla, "Ebo", in October 2012. Dive into the fascinating world of the savannah for a day!

Zoo immersion

Valencia's zoological park stands out from the crowd because it has adopted an innovative concept: total 'zoo-immersion'. Here, there are no fences, no bars, and no cages that are in any way visible. To separate visitors from the animals, natural barriers such as bodies of water, ditches or rocks, and sometimes glass, have been installed... and visitors love it!

The first animals to arrive at the Bioparc came from the former Jardin de Vivaros zoo, which was closed in 2007. Today, 3,000 of them live in the park in an environment as close as possible to their natural habitat. From a faithful reconstruction of the famous Kitum cave, a large artificial lake has been built to allow hippos, crocodiles and different species of exotic fish to swim together.

You'll be able to admire giraffes, zebras, rhinoceroses, antelopes, lions, elephants and different species of birds, with the sensation of being right up close to them .... In addition to the savannah, there are two other, smaller areas reserved for Equatorial Africa (gorillas, chimpanzees) and Madagascar with its lemurs.

We recommend that you consult the park's diary to keep up to date with the festivities on offer. For example, you'll find

  • 20-minute meetings with the animal keepers: they will share with you their knowledge of the personalities of the different animals, their behaviour, as well as the threats and the state of conservation of the species.
  • Observations of animal feeding: the keepers feed the different species, and sometimes even invite you to take part in the activity (with the lemurs, in particular!).
  • "Mystery of the animal world": In this intriguing activity, the Bioparc's amphitheatre becomes a small travelling museum filled with incredible biological samples that will reveal the great enigmas of the animal world. Primate skulls, lion claws, elephant teeth, ostrich eggs and snake casts are just some of the impressive biological samples that can be seen up close.
