The hidden wonders of the Egyptian seabed at the Hurghada aquarium

The Great Aquarium of Hurghada is a breathtaking underwater world located in the town of the same name. It is a popular attraction offering visitors an immersive experience of Egyptian marine life.

You'll be fascinated by the bright colours and abundant animal life. In the glass tanks and 360° underwater tunnels, you'll meet sharks, rays, sea turtles, exotic fish and much more.

The large aquarium is designed to transport you to an incredible underwater world and offers live shark watching opportunities.

Children can also take part in fun educational activities such as fish feeding workshops and dolphin shows.

Creation and history of the Great Aquarium of Hurghada

The Grand Aquarium opened its doors in January 2015, at a time when the Red Sea had no structure of this kind. The idea was to create a safe and fun space where international and Egyptian tourists could discover the animal life of the Red Sea, but also of the different oceans around the world.

Since its opening, the Great Aquarium of Hurghada has become the place of choice for holidaymakers and residents of Hurghada looking to explore the seabed.

With its huge glass tanks, over 3,500 cubic metres of water in total, its underwater tunnels and its educational activities for children, the Great Aquarium of Hurghada retains its title as a must-see activity during a family trip to Hurghada, for example.

The aquarium's mission: respect for marine life

It's important to remember that the aquarium is an NGO, a non-profit, non-governmental organisation. This private collaboration between three men is the fruit of a shared passion for the marine world.

The Hurghada Aquarium's mission is to conserve and present Egyptian marine life to the general public in a respectful manner.

Practical information

Although the Hurghada Aquarium's mission remains entirely honourable, we'd like to take this opportunity to remind you how much better it is to see these animals in the wild, if you get the chance.

Admittedly, there is less chance of spotting them and they will certainly be less close than behind the glass of an aquarium, but they will be happier.

Swimming with sharks

One of the aquarium's most popular attractions is swimming with the sharks, but rest assured you're in an extremely well-protected cage and the sharks aren't hungry - but still!

For thrill-seekers, 35 minutes in the cage will cost you $125. For those who prefer to watch the sharks from afar, the aquarium team feeds the big fish every day at 11am, then again at 3pm. A spectacle not to be missed.
