The history of Port El Kantaoui

Located 10 km north of Sousse, Port el Kantaoui is a marina that has become one of Tunisia's most important seaside resorts. It was former president Habib Bourguiba who had the idea of creating an integrated tourist resort covering 307 hectares, in order to develop tourism in the Sahel region, where he was originally from (he was born, died and is buried in Monastir). The port, which houses 340 boats of all categories on a 4-hectare stretch of water, was inaugurated in 1979, and the golf course in 1980. The highly acclaimed golf course covers 130 hectares of hillside. Today, the area is home to numerous hotels, shops, bars and restaurants, a thalassotherapy centre and a leisure park, Hannibal Park. On 26 June 2015, an Islamist attack killed 38 tourists, including 30 Britons, on the beach of the Riu Imperia Marhaba, one of the resort's hotels.

Why visit Port El Kantaoui?

It's been said that Port El Kantaoui is a bit like Tunisia's Saint Tropez. The atmosphere is gently chic, without glitter or excessive crowds, on the edge of a marina that welcomes yachts as well as pirate ships or glass-bottomed vessels offering half-day or full-day sea outings. There's something for everyone: thalassotherapy, golf, shopping, an amusement park for children... and of course the beach, lined with a whole host of resorts, usually all-inclusive. It stretches for 7 km towards Sousse. On the programme: relaxation and water sports galore! Windsurfing, water skiing, surfing, pedal boats, parasailing...

It is accessed through a gate reminiscent of the entrances to Arab medinas. Lined with attractive houses with white facades decorated with wooden balconies, the central street leads down to the marina. The site is reminiscent of the Arab-Moorish village of Sidi Bou Saïd, with its white houses, arcades, arches and flower-filled alleyways. Along the waterfront, stalls sell caramelised peanuts, hot doughnuts and fresh fruit juices. All tempting smells that immediately whet the appetite!

You can also spend the afternoon shopping in the pedestrian streets. You can also spend the afternoon shopping in the pedestrianised streets, in craft shops, clothes, accessories and beauty products boutiques... And if you want to take a break from your shopping, there's nothing like a break in one of the Moorish cafés with their patio terraces. You can relax in the shade of an orange tree, smoking a chicha while listening to the water pouring from a fountain. If you want to quench your thirst the Tunisian way, order a mint or pine nut tea. Excellent with some date pastries!

The largest water park in Tunisia

If you're a thrill-seeker, you're in for a treat: the 2-hectare Acqua Palace has wave pools, a lazy river and a number of slides, including the Kamikaze (where you go at 50km/h), the Black Hole (17m high and 150m long), the Rocket (the highest in Tunisia) and the Space Boat, a kind of whirlpool slide on an inflatable buoy, making for an unforgettable day out with the whole family! It costs 40 dinars (€12.4) for children and 45 dinars (€14) for adults. Tunisia's biggest water park is open from May to October. More info on the Acquapalace website

Hannibal Park theme park

Admittedly, it's not Disneyland, but children should love this little park with its twenty or so attractions, especially for the little ones: ghost train, mini rollercoaster, bumper swans, etc. It operates on a points system per ride, so it can be expensive... Practical info

How do I get to Port el Kantaoui?

Port El Kantaoui marina is 27km north of Monastir airport. Allow 40 minutes for transfers.

Practical information for visiting Port El Kantaoui

You don't choose Port El Kantaoui for a change of scenery. It's an artificial resort created from scratch in the 1980s. There are no medinas or typical souks like in Sousse and Monastir, even if the large entrance gate is a fine imitation of a citadel wall. Mint tea aside, you could just as easily be in southern Spain, Sicily or Cyprus. If you're looking for a typical setting, Sousse, Monastir or Mahdia is the place to go. If you come in summer, there will be lots of people, of course, but also more events: festivals, music stages, regattas, etc. Beware: taxis outside the hotels in Port El Kantaoui tend to double the fare. Better to walk a little and hail them on the street.

Our favourite hotel in Port El Kantaoui

Directly on the seafront, 2 km from the seaside resort of Port El Kantaoui, the Sentido Bellevue Park is a top-of-the-range resort with quality entertainment. You'll appreciate the quality of its sports facilities and catering, its lovely pool area, its beautiful gardens and the free Wi-Fi throughout. Bellevue Park has lived up to its name, with a beautiful view of the sea directly opposite and lovely gardens! It has kept the Andalusian-Moorish spirit of the great palaces of Port el Kantaoui. A friendly hotel on a human scale, it also has a spa with a heated indoor pool, a mini-club and a great gym.
