Voodoo and New Orleans, a supernatural relationship

At its height in 19th-century Louisiana, voodoo combined beliefs and rituals linked to the afterlife.

It was associated with the difficult lives of slaves. These occult practices have always been practised by slaves. Despite the pressure and incomprehension of Catholics in particular.

The dark side of New Orleans is still present and continues to set the city apart in the United States. All in all, one more reason to discover and love this 300-year-old city!

Discover voodoo, the rites and legends of New Orleans

A land of beliefs, Louisiana is linked to the occult. African and Creole cultures continue to shape the presence and emergence of these rituals.

Today, the voodoo cult still involves a significant proportion of the city's population.

In addition to voodoo beliefs, the city is famous for its haunted sites and cemeteries. Most of the haunted buildings are located in Vieux Carré. These buildings steeped in history are even more disturbing at night, in the shadow of the moon!

Don't miss the guided tour of the Saint Louis Cemetery. You can only visit the cemetery with a tour operator, who can be selected from the tourist office website.

You'll learn all sorts of strange stories about this place. For example, why are the tombs shaped like little houses? In fact, the ground is too loose and every time it floods, the coffins tend to get dug up and float away!

A music festival, the Voodoo Music Experience, used to be held in New Orleans' City Park. For the time being it has been cancelled, but it may reappear soon!

New Orleans knows how to make the most of its mystique. Many films and TV series have made use of the city's mysterious settings. At the same time, the city's architecture, history and even its subtropical vegetation add to the mystery.

Examples include the film Interview with a Vampire, the series American Horror Story III: Coven and the series True Blood.

The Voodoo Museum: there had to be a place that explained this animist ritual and its presence in New Orleans. This museum, founded in 1972, does just that.

Marie Laveau, voodoo priestess

Marie Laveau was a Métis woman and a follower of voodoo. She was also an important figure in New Orleans. Beautiful and enigmatic, she was known for her divinatory powers.

She knew how to obtain the services of important people. Occasionally, she used her assets to blackmail her enemies.

She is still worshipped today and is buried in Saint-Louis Cemetery No. 1. Her grave is the third most visited in the United States!

For the record, the character of Marie Laveau is a heroine in the series American Horror Stroy III: Coven. She's even the central character, a true reincarnation!
