The Capilano suspension bridge, an original walk close to the town

Capilano Park is a must for nature lovers. It is admirably well laid out with respect for nature and its ecosystem. Thanks to its astonishing infrastructure, you can discover the flora from a wide range of viewpoints. Whether you're a family, a couple or a group of friends, the park is suitable for all types of visitor and is just 15 minutes from downtown Vancouver! The dense forest at the gateway to the big city. It's the ideal place for a breath of fresh air amidst gigantic 250-year-old trees. Whether you're simply admiring the serenity of the place, looking for an original hike or curious to learn more about the indigenous culture that preceded the Europeans, there are plenty of good reasons to visit Capilano Park.

Get some height at Parc Capilano

Capilano Park has to be earned! To get there, you have to cross the famous suspension bridge of the same name. Once on the bridge, your feet are 137 m above a 70 m deep canyon! That's more than 200 m above the ground. Vancouver's oldest attraction, the bridge was built in 1889. However, the current version was refurbished in 1956. In the park, the Cliffwalk along the cliff and the Treetops Adventure are accessible with the same ticket as for the bridge.

The first, the Cliffwalk, is a long walk on wooden footbridges that follow the granite curve of a precipice above the Capilano River. At 213 metres long, it offers superb views of the forest and the canyon. The entire length is only held in the air by 16 anchor points in the cliff, and as well as being a real technical feat, it allows the walk to have minimal impact on its surroundings.

As for the second, the Treetops Adventure, it's a trail of footbridges connecting the trees of the forest, a total immersion in the ecosystem of Western Canada. What's more, like the Cliffwalk, this ride limits its impact on the forest environment thanks to its attachment system. Unlike other tree courses or accrobranch courses, the footbridges do not prevent the trees from growing thanks to aninnovative attachment system that does not penetrate them. What's more, the wood for the entire walkway comes from the recycling of old grain lifts in the region. Dive into this magnifying glass of Western Canada's Rainforest ecosystem,

Find out more about the site's past

There is also a history centre where you can find out more about the area and the Kia'palano tribe who used to live there. The name of the tribe means "beautiful river", obviously in reference to the river that the Capilano bridge crosses. We discover that most of the statues in the park were carved by the descendants of the indigenous people. This was a way of returning the land to its original inhabitants before George Grant Mackay took over these 6 hectares of forest in 1888 to build his cabin and the famous bridge.

Of course, there's plenty to eat and drink on site. However, we advise you to bring your own picnic. With plenty of tables to choose from, you'll be able to pick your own spot to eat, whether it's a quiet spot or one with an enchanting view. To digest, there's nothing better than choosing from the park's various trails. One of them is particularly interesting: 2.6 km long, it starts at the Cleveland dam and passes by a salmon farm, two points of interest worth visiting.

Practical information

👛 Prices: Like most attractions in Canada, the price of an entrance ticket is fairly high. For Capilano Bridge and Park, expect to pay 63 Canadian dollars per adult, or around €48. There are, of course, several ranges of reduced rates for younger visitors.

Booking: Book directly online to save yourself the wait at the ticket offices on site.

🚌 Transport: A free shuttle from Canada Place will take you there in high season, but public transport options also exist. Take the Seabus from the Waterfront to North Vancouver, for example, then the 236 bus directly to the park.

⏲️ Duration: It's possible to spend the whole day wandering around Capilano Park, but for those who want to make the most of their time, a 2-3 hour visit is sufficient.

Editor's tip

If you're on a tight budget, opt for Lynn Canyon Park, a little further away but free of charge. Its suspension bridge is more modest, but there are a number of hiking trails, such as Norvan Falls. There will be fewer tourists there too.
