Family destinations in the Southern Alps

The two départements of the Southern Alps are home to a number of communes that have been awarded the Label Famille Plus.

To obtain this certification, the towns and villages are committed to offering a special welcome to families. They also offer a wide range of activities for children and families, with discounts for children, children's play parks, baby facilities, child-friendly restaurants and activities supervised by qualified professionals...

Some of the towns in the Southern Alps that have been awarded the label include :

  • Les Orres in the Hautes-Alpes
  • Val d'Allos in the north of the Alpes de Haute-Provence
  • Dévoluy in the west of the Hautes-Alpes
  • Montgenèvre in the north-east of the Hautes-Alpes
  • Orcières-Merlette in the Hautes-Alpes

Attractions for children and adults in the Southern Alps

The two départements of the Southern Alps have a number of attractions that are sure to please young and old alike.

So whether you love nature, gastronomy, sport or discovery, your family will always find something to enjoy in the Southern Alps!

For example, don't miss out on a visit to an educational farm, which is both fun and educational!

The Fermes au hameau du Fournet in the Queyras region of the Hautes-Alpes will be sure to catch your eye. Here you can discover the rural mountain life of yesteryear, with its beautiful stone farmhouses.

In the Alpes de Haute-Provence, make a diversion to the Élevage Bel'Ane educational farm.

A destination for young and old all year round

It's a real pleasure to discover the Southern Alps throughout the seasons.

Families can enjoy the snow from December until March. The ski resorts are full of activities at this time of year.

You can ski in complete safety, and why not organise a dog-sleigh outing?

In summer, the mountains of the Southern Alps are transformed. Forests, flower-filled fields and hiking trails await you!

Where to sleep at a campsite in the Southern Alps?

La Ferme de Castellane campsite awaits you at the gateway to the Gorges du Verdon, in the commune of Castellane.

The campsite is set on the edge of the forest, and you can even enjoy a view of the mountains from your accommodation.

All the campsite's chalets and mobile homes are decorated with wooden furniture. But modern comforts have not been forgotten. Every unit has cable TV.

👉 When can you come and enjoy the wonders of the Southern Alps with your family?

The two departments of the Southern Alps can be visited all year round!

Winter is the best time of year for families to discover the Southern Alps. Discovering the snow, skiing, tobogganing and snowshoeing are all great family activities!

The ski resorts offer winter activities to suit all ages.

But the Alpes de Haute-Provence and Hautes-Alpes are also popular destinations in summer!

So for a pony ride, a short walk in the forest or in the region's many national parks, July and August are perfect.

🚌 How do I get to the departments in the Southern Alps?

The Alpes de Haute-Provence and Hautes-Alpes are easily accessible by road.

The main route serving the region is the A 51 motorway. This dual carriageway links Aix-en-Provence to Gap, serving Manosque, Sisteron and Digne.

From Grenoble, take the N85 road to Gap and the heart of the Hautes-Alpes in just under 2 hours.

If you choose to travel by train, the SNCF runs several services from Paris to Grenoble or Marseille Saint-Charles station.

From there, you'll need to take a TER to Manosque, Sisteron, Gap and Briançon stations.

By train from Paris, the journey to the Southern Alps takes between 6 and 7 hours.

The nearest airport remains Marseille-Provence, with Grenoble airport also accessible by plane from Paris.

🚌 How do you get around the Hautes-Alpes and Alpes de Haute-Provence departments?

The car remains the most practical means of transport for discovering small villages and the most outlying points of interest.

However, you can also travel by public transport.

The main towns are linked by the railway line that runs from Briançon to Manosque. Several towns and villages are thus served.

Local bus networks are also a good alternative to the car.

The Zou regional transport network of the Provence Alpes Côte-D'Azur region efficiently serves the departments of Alpes-de-Haute-Provence and Hautes-Alpes.
