On board a historic train

In operation since 1891, the Ardèche train line historically links Tournon-sur-Rhône to Lamastre. On the rails for over a century, the locomotives of this steam engine are the pride of the Ardèche people. If the train has become a must-do activity in the Ardèche, it's mainly because it allows you to explore nature that would normally be out of reach. It's impossible to discover the secrets of the gorges on foot, by bike or by car. So take one of the train journeys and set off for a few hours in the heart of a rich, diverse and unspoilt natural environment.

A spectacular tourist attraction

To the rhythm of steam, the Ardèche train takes passengers on a timeless journey through the heart of the Doux Gorges. The Doux rises at an altitude of over 1,000 metres in the commune of St-Bonnet-le-Froid, then flows for 70 km before emptying into the Rhône at Saint Jean de Muzols. The train's winding route along the Doux valley necessitated the construction of numerous engineering structures to hold the track against the rock face. Since 1969, this line has been reserved for tourist trips, providing an opportunity to discover landscapes that are inaccessible other than by train. The Train des Gorges runs from Tournon-sur-Rhône station to Colombier-le-Vieux / Saint-Barthélemy-le-Plain station and back.

The 1001 trains of the Ardèche

The name might suggest that there is only one line, but the Train de l'Ardèche actually covers several routes. It's up to you to decide whether you want to board a steam train, cover the whole line or just the wildest parts!

Le Train des Gorges: This round trip is a mid-day excursion. You'll discover wild and varied landscapes, as well as the locomotive turning over on the turntable - by hand, just like in the last century!

The Market Train: This highly original summer journey takes you to the heart of one of the Ardèche's finest markets every Tuesday. Chestnuts and charcuterie are just some of the traditional products you'll be able to sample on the spot!

Le Mastrou: This day trip is an amazing adventure. On the programme: crossing chestnut groves and orchards, with the Doux gorges as a backdrop. You'll also see the locomotive turn over at the end of the journey, and the more athletic can even cycle back!

A journey in the colours of the seasons

Christmas, Easter, Halloween... these are just some of the occasions when the Train de l'Ardèche dresses up in lights to transport you to another world! While the ghost train promises a terrifying journey from a zombie station, the Christmas train guarantees a magical journey through the Doux gorges.

Youngsters will love it, but adults won't be left out either, because the Train de l'Ardèche has thought of everything! And if you're a drink-lover, the beer train and the sommelier train are on the rails in May and December.
